Ten minutes later, He Xu received a call from his uncle.
He Wancheng cut to the chase, “Jiang Shenghe wants to introduce you to a blind date. She’s his wife’s cousin, also from Suzhou. You should meet her tonight. If it were someone else, you could just stand them up, but it’s Jiang Shenghe who introduced her. You know the consequences of standing this girl up, right?”
He Xu had just arrived at the restaurant. He picked up his water glass and fed Luo Yu a sip. He replied to He Wancheng with dissatisfaction, “No… Uncle, why did you ask him to introduce me to a girlfriend? What if I don’t like her, how can I refuse then? Aren’t you and my parents pushing me into a fire pit?!”
He Wancheng retorted, “I heard from your dad that you’re lacking water in your five elements. Coincidentally, this girl’s name is Luo Yu. You two are a perfect match.”
“…”
He Xu was secretly delighted but still reluctantly said, “What if she doesn’t like my looks? My mom is too embarrassed to call me herself, so you’re the one who ended up calling me?”
“Your parents will definitely call you soon. Jiang Shenghe contacted me personally, so naturally I have to tell you about it myself.”
He Xu was then lectured by his uncle for over ten minutes, receiving all sorts of brainwashing, emphasizing that he absolutely had to go that evening, be polite to the girl, and not be irresponsible.
For the first time, He Xu found his uncle’s nagging quite agreeable. He kept the phone to his ear, listening attentively, occasionally chiming in.
Just as he hung up, his mother called. Her first words blasted his ear, “Change your WeChat profile picture right now! What will the girl think if she sees it?!”
“Mom, is it possible for me not go on this blind date? Why should you and Uncle tie my life to this?”
“Because you still need your father and me for support. If you want to enjoy life, there’s no such thing as a free lunch.”
His mother didn’t launch into a long lecture. “If after meeting her you really feel that marrying that girl would be painful, then even if it offends your Uncle and Jiang Shenghe, I won’t let you live a miserable life.”
He Xu suddenly couldn’t joke anymore. He had always thought his mother valued profit more than his marital happiness.
“Thank you, Mom. Don’t worry, I’ll go tonight.”
Luo Yu was didn’t know what was going on. She only thought that his family had arranged a blind date for him.
No wonder this guy suddenly went crazy, wanting to get a marriage certificate with her; he was trying to win her over first, leaving himself an escape route.
She pushed away the water glass he offered again, and only spoke after he hung up the phone, calmly saying, “You are naturally free to go on blind dates, and I know you have your own reasons, but we have to break up cleanly first. Then you can go on your blind date.”
He Xu took a sip himself, then leaned over and pretended to feed her with his mouth. Luo Yu felt aggrieved and slapped him, squeezing the water out of his cheeks, wetting his pants.
“…”
He Xu didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. He rubbed his face; too much joy really could really turn into sorrow.
“My blind date was introduced by your brother-in-law, his wife’s cousin. Weren’t you worried my family wouldn’t approve? Now they’re forcing me to meet you.”
Taking advantage of her momentary daze, He Xu kissed her cheek. “Satisfied now? Little ostrich egg?”
… …
To get Jiang Shenghe’s help, He Xu had offered to take care of the twins when he and Luo Qi were busy.
When Tengteng and Little Rose were a year and a half old, they could already speak a few words. He Xu would take them to play for half a day every week.
He and Luo Yu had already met each other’s parents and were engaged. She wanted to enjoy a couple more years of being alone with him; having children wasn’t in their plans for the next two years.
“Unca, give.”
Little Rose handed the half-empty bottle to He Xu, clapping her hands as she chased after Doudou and Mimi.
She kept calling He Xu ‘Unca’; ‘Uncle’ was too difficult to pronounce. Naturally it was Luo Yu’s idea.

Jiang Shenghe and Luo Qi were both working overtime today and haven’t returned yet.
Luo Qi had just finished a video conference with Yu Bo and the others, finally paying back the 50 million she borrowed from Lingjia Capital.
Her bet with Chang Chuxin had been postponed for two years; Chang Chuxin said that including her time during pregnancy and childbirth would be unfair.
In truth, there was no unfairness in it; it was simply that Chang Chuxin’s mindset had changed. He no longer had his initial prejudice against her and was willing to cooperate and achieve a win-win situation.
Yu Bo had just jokingly referred to her at the meeting, “A master of using minimal force to achieve maximum effect.”
Yuanwei Medical had smoothly exited the low-to-mid-end market in two and a half years, six months ahead of schedule.
In fact, if Chang Chuxin hadn’t postponed the bet, it would have been difficult for Ruipu to beat Yuanwei.
But the six months during which Yuanwei Medical accelerated its withdrawal was where she won. Chang Chuxin’s willingness to introduce clients to Ruipu was also a victory. Shu Rui’s cessation of his sarcastic remarks and now willingness to cooperate with her in winning her gamble with Chang Chuxin was her greatest success.
Yuanwei Medical was Jiang Shenghe’s life’s work, and her wish was for Yuanwei Medical to build its own brand and become a leader in the high-end market.
[I’m downstairs.] Jiang Shenghe texted her.
Luo Qi: [I’ll be right down.]
She shut down her computer and went downstairs.
As always, Jiang Shenghe positioned the driver’s seat facing the entrance of the Yuanwei Building, rolled down the window, letting everyone know he was personally driving her home from work.
Once in the car, Luo Qi stole a kiss from him.
Jiang Shenghe smiled, “You’re in a good mood today.”
“I’m in a good mood every day, but it’s true that we’re now debt-free. We’ve paid off all the money we owe Yu Bo.”
Jiang Shenghe asked, “Did you get your quarterly bonus? Treat me if you did.”
“No. The bonus is late this year. It’s almost the end of the month and it still hasn’t been paid. They said the calculation method has changed, and the bonus is more than in previous years.”
Luo Qi teased him, “You’re not going to go and urge the finance department again tomorrow just for a free meal, are you?”
Jiang Shenghe laughed, “I really haven’t urged the finance department, never, why don’t you believe me?”
Luo Qi laughed. No matters how much he denies it, she just wouldn’t believe it.
When they arrived at the villa entrance, they could hear the laughter of two children in the distance.
In the yard, He Xu and Luo Yu were watching the two children.
Tengteng and Little Rose were playing with Doudou and Mimi. When they saw their father’s car come in, Little Rose got up from the grass and jumped up and down.
“Daddy, Mommy!”
Tengteng, lying on the grass, also called out.
Jiang Shenghe and Luo Qi got down, and Little Rose rushed over, humming some song.
Jiang Shenghe half-squatted down and caught his daughter. “Tell Daddy what you’re singing?”
Little Rose was shy and buried her face in his neck without saying a word.
He asked again, and she laughed and ran away, hugging Luo Qi’s leg. “Mommy, hug me!”
Luo Qi lifted her up.
Tengteng also ran over from the grass, and Jiang Shenghe picked up his son.
Doudou and Mimi gathered around them.
Luo Yu leaned on He Xu’s shoulder and took a photo of her cousin’s beautiful family of six.

T/N: Luo Qi and Jiang Shenghe’s 7-year journey is finally over! *cries with happiness*
This was quite a personal journey for me as well. I’d always liked Second Male Leads, and I fell in love with Jiang Shenghe’s quiet devotion to Luo Qi very early. Before I even finished reading this story, I had already decided to translate it. He made my heart ache so many times I wanted to inflict the pain on others too haha.
Thank you for following the story with me, hiatus and all, especially those who have been with me since the beginning.
You can see more of Luo Qi and Jiang Shenghe in my other translation work ‘Marriage First, Love Later‘ featuring Qin Moling and Jian Hang.
This posting schedule will be taken over by ‘Pearls and Jade Beside Me in the ’80s‘, an epic story set in the 1980s about love and family, history, culture, artifacts, and some truly satisfying face-slapping.
