[DayTheEngagementWasBroken] Chapter 40.1 — People In Jiancheng Are So Idle

The video of Gou An angrily scolding Xu Ke in order to win the crown quickly spread across major social media platforms and WeChat groups.

Those who hated her called her ‘a shrew’.

People who liked her mocked her, “Hahaha, are you addicted to alcohol and acting in some cheesy 8 pm drama?”

Tang Xinjiu was timid, and while He Yuan was chatting with someone else, she pulled Gou An aside and asked, “Is it worth it to vent your anger for someone you just met today, who’s going back abroad tomorrow, and who you might not see again in this life?”

“It’s not a question of whether it’s worth it or not,” Gou An said. “The focus of this farce wasn’t He Yuan himself. She came after me.”

Her tone was righteous and awe-inspiring. Tang Xinjiu was silent for a few seconds then gave her two thumbs up.

Gou An noticed that people around her were grinning foolishly at their phones while speaking, and looking up at her from their phone screens while laughing. She opened her phone absentmindedly and took a look.

She wasn’t surprised to find that He Ran had posted her recent feat on WeChat Moments.

The words were sour to the sky: History keeps repeating itself like crazy. It’s so frightening.

When she clicked on the video, she saw herself shaking the champagne bottle, and with a clear look of ‘go to hell’ written on her face, she smashed the cork right onto Xu Ke’s face. The latter screamed in fear and covered her face. Then she went even further and sprayed half a bottle of champagne on the daughter of the Xu family.

Gou An: “…”

It was really wonderful to see one’s self from a third-person perspective.

There was a kind of beauty that was desperate and crazy (not).

The comments that followed from mutual friends were also outrageous:

[Daniel Chou: This is hilarious. The ship’s wine-pouring event is a must-see!]

[Shy Yutong: I look so confused and terrified next to you, like an idiot. Can you please blur it out? It’s so uncultured to post it like that!]

[Person A: Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! ]

Passerby B: It’s over, it’s over, it’s over. Ran ge, you were laid off so quickly, and just as quickly replaced by your younger brother!

[Passerby C: So who’s that curly-haired kid Gou An is protecting? I’m so pissed I missed out on this, I’m on a tournament in Vienna this week! (crying with his hands covering his mouth.JPG)]

The most amazing thing was that when Gou An posted the message [Delete it for me] with an expressionless face, a certain person with a Crayon Shin-chan avatar liked this comment.

Gou An felt a sudden headache. Even though she knew who that person was, she still found it hard to accept the reality. She clicked to take a look: [HJX]

He didn’t even change his name, just directly used his initials.

How come this guy was so idle!

Then Gou An’s reply to He Ran’s comment quickly received countless replies:

[The real owner has appeared]

[I’m dying of laughter]

[Hahahahahahahahahaha]

[Dare to take responsibility for your actions, Miss. You say delete, you are not allowed to delete it.]

Such comments quickly flooded the screen, and in a short period of time, it was filled with more than thirty [hahahaha] messages…

Fortunately, no one accused her of bullying. Compared to Lu Wan, Xu Ke’s popularity was even worse than hers.

Amidst all the [Hahahaha], Gou An saw a […]. This speechless comment was too telepathic. She took a special look at the avatar, and it was the disarming Nohara Shinnosuke eating bread again.

Looking up, she spotted He Jinxing in a corner of the banquet hall. While all the uncles and aunties were taking advantage of this celebrity gathering to socialize frantically, trying to get some useful business value out of this wasted time, this big shot was lazing around by the window, looking completely languid.

There was a woman in an evening gown standing in front of him. Gou An wondered which brave warrior thought she could snatch the heroine’s man away. From the back, it seemed that she was having a great chat with the man.

He Jinxing did not pretend to hold a wine glass like others did. Instead, he held his mobile phone in his hand. The black phone had no fancy phone case and no pendant to attract wealth. It was as boring and stiff as the man was.

… God knew how he could appear gentle and polite when talking to others, and at the same time be perfunctory enough to be liking and replying on WeChat Moments.

While talking to the person in front of him, he occasionally lowered his head to glance at his phone, and when he looked up again, the smile on his face would become more sincere.

It was hard not to guess what was making him happy.

Once people reached a certain level of shame, they no longer had any fear.

Gou An’s head was buzzing as she clicked on the innocent-looking avatar.

[DON’T BE AFRAID GOU CAN WIN: Don’t laugh!!!!!]

This was the most emotional sentence she ever said in her private WeChat messages with He Jinxing.

She originally thought he wouldn’t reply.

Unexpectedly, the man seemed to be extremely good at multitasking. Almost at the same moment she successfully sent the message, he lowered his eyes and noticed the lit phone screen, and paused in his words…

After taking another look, he raised his hand lazily to signal a pause in the conversation, then began to read the message on his phone with no expression on his face.

Ten seconds later.

[HJX: You did this on your own, why are you mad at me?]

Gou An held the phone in her hand, speechless. The person in charge of the He family seemed to be angry.

This realization brought her back to her senses a little. She was just about to type a sincere letter to her elder explaining that she hadn’t lost her temper but had just put in some extra exclamation marks to express her excitement.

A few more lines of words popped up in the chat window.

[HJX: Still not feeling relieved after spilling the wine?]

[HJX: Should we kick her off the boat?]

Gou An: “…”

She wasn’t sure if this a taunt.…

[HJX: It can be done.]

[HJX: After all, it’s my ship, so you can be a bit willful sometimes.]

She didn’t know why, but the interjections used by this person inexplicably carried a serious and murderous tone, just like the ancient tyrant emperor who said, ‘No problem, I can light beacons to trick the princes, I won’t die for this little fun’.

Oh. It wasn’t mockery.

Gou An was a little shocked.

The elders of the He family had been very accommodating to her requests recently because of the matter with He Ran, and it seemed even He Jinxing has been affected. He has become very cheerful and now seemed to be very easy to talk to.

So much so that sometimes Gou An felt like she has two dads—

The last time she had a similar conversation was when she gave Gou Yu back his credit card. When he heard that Gou An bought a little dress worth 120,000 yuan, he didn’t react much, just smiled and said, ‘You can buy it, why not? Dad works hard to make money for An’an’.

The tone was exactly the same.

It gave people the illusion that ‘you can be as outrageous as you want.’

Gou An knew when to quit, so she sent He Jinxing an emoticon of a cat rolling over and hugging the thigh of another cat with a ‘Big Boss’ logo on its head, and then quietly put her phone away.

Not daring to look at He Jinxing’s reaction when he saw her emoticon, she turned around and went to the dessert table to eat something. When she came back, she found that the man who had been communicating with her happily on WeChat was now alone, leaning against the window.

At this moment, he seemed to have carved out a small world of his own, with a barrier erected around him that no one could approach. He was staring intently at the reflection of the moon on the sea outside the window. The strands of hair that had been blown off his forehead by the sea breeze brushed softly between his eyebrows, left alone and not dealt with…

His handsome profile was invincible.

The lady who had been standing in front of him and trying to talk to him was somehow sent away with just a few words.

From the Day the Engagement was Broken translated by Maela @ whitemoonlighttranslations.com

T/N: In order to please his beloved concubine, King You of the Zhou dynasty ( circa 780 BC) repeatedly lit beacons that were intended to signal vassal princes from far away to come to his aid. The princes and their armies would come only to find out it was a joke. When an actual invasion came, the beacons were once again lit but the princes no longer came, thinking it was another joke and King You was captured and executed.

This tale has since become a prime example of a ruler’s reckless actions, caused by infatuation, leading to the downfall of a dynasty.
