[ContrastTeamInADadW/BabyShow] Chapter 98.2 — Recording the Show

After the introduction, the next part of the program was the game session.

“Next, let’s move on to the first game of today: ‘I Draw, You Guess‘!”

After that, the host introduced the rules of the game to everyone according to how they rehearsed it before.

“There are 5 family teams on the scene today, and Host Linlin and I will also form our own team, making a total of 6 teams. We will be divided into two camps: Red and Blue. The game has three rounds. In each round, each camp will send a team to compete. After the game begins, a word will appear on the screen here. One contestant on each side will draw the word on his or her drawing board, and their partner contestant will guess the word according to drawing on their board. The team that guesses first will get one point.

“In order to save time, we have divided everyone into camps in advance.”

After the host finished speaking, he met the puzzled eyes of the guests, pointed to the stools everyone was sitting on, and explained further, “Did everyone notice the chairs you’re sitting on? Look at the chairs, those with red flowers on the bottom are in the Red Camp, and those with blue flowers on the bottom are in the Blue Camp.”

“So that’s how it is…” Everyone suddenly realized.

At this time, Huang Hong, the actor father from the Red Camp, raised his hand and pretended to complain, “This is unfair! How come the hosts are in the Blue Camp?”

“You seem to overestimate Host Linlin’s IQ,” the host in the middle retorted.

The female host next to him also echoed, “In fact, Host Li and I have always had a plastic friendship. Don’t worry, there is no tacit understanding between us.”

The banter and mutual insults between the hosts caused a burst of laughter from the audience, and also livened up the atmosphere on the stage.

After a discussion between the camp members, Lin Cheng and Lin Momo were picked to go in the first round for the Red Camp. They will play against the Blue Camp singer, Wang Hanli, and his 12-year-old son, Haohao.

The two family teams went to opposite sides of the stage respectively. In order to be fair, the logistics group placed a partition in the middle of the stage to ensure that the two parents could only see their child’s drawing boards.

When the host said “Game start!”, the first word popped up on the prompt screen in front of Lin Momo and Haohao.

Just as Lin Cheng said before, Lin Momo’s nervousness was unnecessary. The words prepared by the program team for this episode were indeed much simpler than the words Lin Momo had seen used in previous episodes.

The first word was [chair].

This was not difficult for Lin Momo at all. Without much thought, Lin Momo drew the seat, a backrest, and four chair legs on the drawing board.

“Chair,” Lin Cheng said the answer accurately.

Unfortunately, the Blue Camp next to them shouted the answer ‘chair’ half a second earlier than Lin Momo’s team.

One point was given to the Blue Camp.

On the sidelines, the Blue Camp members began to cheer, while the Red Camp felt sorry for themselves.

Taking advantage of the gap when the host began to ‘call for order’, Lin Momo glanced at the Blue Camp’s drawing board next to her and finally realized where she lost.

On the Blue Camp’s drawing board, the ‘chair’ was drawn with a simple ‘L’ underneath it were two ‘1’s.

Such a minimalist style of drawing! But thanks to Haohao’s fast drawing speed, his dad Wang Hanli still had enough time to figure out what was drawn, beating Lin Momo’s team by half a second

At the beginning of the second round, [Tiger] appeared on the prompt screen.

This time, learning from the experience and lessons of the previous round, Lin Momo also simplified her drawing a little bit—a circle, two ears, and the character ‘king’ in the middle of the forehead.

Lin Momo showed her drawing board, and Lin Cheng guessed accurately again, “Tiger.”

In this round, the Red Camp scored one point.

In the next few rounds, [Leaf], [Airplane][Bicycle], and [Bee] appeared in turn…

As the game continued, the content of the prompts became a little more difficult.

Wang Hanli of the Blue Camp looked at his son’s ‘freehand’ drawing and gradually fell into confusion. He could only laugh and cry while constantly shouting, “Do two more strokes” and “Draw more”…

Although Wang Hanli was able to eventually guess the correct answer in the end, he was always one step behind Lin Momo and Lin Cheng.

After the first nine rounds, the score was 6 to 3. Lin Momo’s team led by 3 points.

“By the way, Momo’s drawing skills are really good. It’s clear and concise. I can basically guess what she’s drawing at a glance.”

The people in the audience talked among themselves next to them.

“Hahaha, I also think Lin Momo draws well.”

“But after all, she is a child of a celebrity, and she must have learned so many things since young. I guess she has studied drawing before,” someone guessed.

The people next to him also nodded and replied, “That’s right.”

Let alone children of celebrities, even for children from ordinary families nowadays, drawing was a common interest that they would get extra lessons for.

However, they all guessed wrong.

Lin Momo has not studied how to draw specifically. The reason why she drew well was entirely because she practiced drawing ‘small advertisements’ and making her own ‘small menus’ during the recording of the program [Living with Dad].

On the stage, the games between the two camps continued.

In the last round, two characters popped up on the prompt screen: [Taotie].

Lin Momo was dumbfounded; the kid from the Blue Camp was dumbfounded; and the audience was also dumbfounded.

“Oh my god! How will they draw this?”

“Hahaha, they’re done.”

… …

Hearing the sudden noise from the audience and looking at the host’s half-smile, Blue Camp dad contestant Wang Hanli was confused and shouted to the host, “What’s going on?”

“No, nothing,” the host said, holding back a laugh, “It’s just that this word is a little bit difficult. Babies, just try to draw it and see if the dads can guess it.”

“Okay, then you go ahead and draw it, son,” Wang Hanli called out to Haohao.

However, Haohao just stood there holding the drawing board, feeling deeply tangled. He recognized what these two characters meant, but the question was… how should he draw it??

“Hurry up and draw, son,” Wang Hanli urged.

“I know, but this is not an easy thing to draw,” Haohao said, frowning. In the end he held on to his drawing board and draw a lot.

“Cow?” Wang Hanli guessed.

“No!”

“Is it… a sheep?”

“No.”

“What is that? Draw it more like how it looks like!” Wang Hanli said anxiously, but he still couldn’t guess it after shouting out several guesses.

——

Lin Momo’s situation on the other side was not much better.

The boy from the other camp knew what those two characters together meant, but Lin Momo didn’t know it at all.

Thinking of what Lin Cheng had said to her before, Lin Momo just split the two characters and broke down their radicals.

Lin Momo first drew two big boxes representing each character.

For the character ‘Tao’, Lin Momo drew a small number in the upper left corner, a tiger on the right, and a bowl of rice at the bottom. For the character ‘Tie’, Lin Momo couldn’t think of what to draw so she just put a question mark first, and there was still a bowl of rice at the bottom.

The content on Lin Momo’s drawing board was broadcast on the big screen with Lin Cheng and Wang Hanli facing away, and there was another round of noise below.

“What is this?”

“Why do I feel it’s even more confusing than Haohao’s?”

… …

On the stage, Lin Momo had already turned the drawing board to Lin Cheng.

Seeing the content on it, Lin Cheng’s eyes moved slightly, and he quickly said the two words “Tao Tie”.

Everyone at the scene was shocked.

“That’s amazing!”

“Momo’s dad, explain how you guessed that this is Taotie?”

“There’s a ‘number’ here, a ‘tiger’ here, and the rice bowl below is either ‘rice’ or ‘eat’.” Lin Cheng pointed to the drawing board and explained.

This explanation also made the audience suddenly realize.

“So the word was directly split into two parts?”

“I see!”

“People who know this word will try hard to think about how to draw the shape of a Taotie. Momo doesn’t know this word, so she thought of splitting them into two parts.”

“Haha, so smart.”

… …

The host on the stage also nodded in understanding. But then he pointed to the second box on the drawing  board where Lin Momo only half-drew the radicals. He asked Lin Cheng, “What about the word ‘tie’ How did you guess it right?”

“I really couldn’t see it.” Lin Cheng said truthfully.

“Huh?”

“But weren’t the other team shouting about pigs, cows, sheep, and other animals?”

This information at least made Lin Cheng certain that the thing on the prompt screen should be some kind of living thing that’s hard to draw, and he thought it might be a mythical beast.

Hearing this, even the host couldn’t help but make a ‘worship’ gesture to Lin Cheng.

[Tiger]. The character Momo wrote on her drawing was ‘wang’ or 王, meaning ‘king’. Tigers are almost universally drawn with 王 on their foreheads, and since they are considered protectors, they are popular with children’s toys, hats, clothes etc. and Momo would know this very well.

Even if it doesn’t look like a tiger, having that ‘king’ on its forehead means it’s a tiger 😂

If you’ve read ancient c-romance novels, the prince there would be referred to as ‘Wang’ (translated as ‘prince’ even if its literally ‘king’ because they are one level lower than their father/brother, the emperor)

[Taotie] 饕餮 is an ancient mythical beast known for its gluttony and greed. It’s part of the Four Perils that cause chaos and destruction. Since it’s mostly found cast in bronze from ancient times, it’s a bit hard for anyone to draw 😭

Momo broke down the first character [Tao] 饕 into top and bottom.  ‘Numbers’ on upper left and ‘tiger’ on upper right, then ‘bowl of rice’ under the two. This is because the upper radical means ‘symbol or number’ but also ‘roar’, and the lower radicals are ‘food/eat’. As a whole it means the ‘fierce sound of eating’ or gluttony.

For the second character [Tie] 餮, Momo didn’t know how to draw the upper radical (‘to finish/exterminate’) so she just drew a question mark, and the lower radical was still a ‘bowl of rice’. It means devour all the food, and again, gluttony.

  1. I’ve read a couple of novels that featured a taotie as the main character. They were portrayed a lot cuter than they’re probably meant to be 😂

  2. There’s a movie with a nice representation of a Two tie “the great wall” with Matt Damon
