[DayTheEngagementWasBroken] Chapter 24.2 — Business Card

Lu Wan looked at her blankly, biting her lower lip, looking a little at a loss.

She was born beautiful, but because of the hardships of life she has became thin and her pale skin almost looked unhealthy. When she looked at others like this, it was very pitiful and, it must be said, very lethal.

In the original novel, the heroine was so beautiful that she became lucky—or unlucky—again and again because of her beauty, which goes back and forth over more than one million words and thousands of chapters.

But to Gou An, this meant nothing. She stood up coldly and said, “Ade, show her out.”

The cuddly maid in her maid outfit responded with an ‘okay’. She had watched Gou An grow up, and she knew very well that the days after the fat cat died, Gou An did nothing but sleep and cry, as if she had lost her soul…

Ade had just overheard the subsequent events and was shocked, now knowing the whole story. Her mind was filled with thoughts of how bad this Miss Lu Wan was. How could there be such a person in the world? It seemed as if she was born to go against our An’an!

At this time, she received the instruction ‘show her out’, and Ade hurriedly responded in the affirmative and rushed forward to comply. However, before she could touch Lu Wan, Gou Xun called her to stop.

“Wait, what are you doing? Bullying people together? She’s apologized and explained He Ran’s matter clearly.” Gou Xun sat on the sofa, tilting his head, looking coldly at his sister who in his eyes was only making trouble. “What else do you want? Gou An, even if you keep making things difficult for Lu Wan, the cat will not come back.”

“I’m making things difficult her?”

“Yeah, I don’t even know why you’re so obsessed with this!”

“We picked up Jiaojiao together. Gou Xun, you found the cat yourself! You took it out of the torn cardboard box, you said you would be good to it, you told it in person that it would have a home from now on!” Gou An raised her voice, choking a bit, but she didn’t cry, “Didn’t it rub against you, crawled into your bed, eaten the canned food you fed it with your own hands?! Am I making things difficult for her?!”

“Gou An—”

“Fine.”

Gou An suddenly waved her hand to stop Gou Xun from continuing.

As Jiang Yuan anxiously told Gou Xun to apologize to his sister and that he couldn’t talk like that, Gou An lowered her head and looked at her brother…

The face in front of her was both familiar and unfamiliar.

She suddenly remembered, Oh, that’s right, Gou Xun was also in that nightmare.

He stood with Ye Lang and watched her being taken away by the police.

Gou An became more silent, and Gou Xun—who was looking at her—was stunned.

For most of the past, their relationship as siblings was not good, and there was always chaos and confusion whenever they were together, but from beginning to end, they never really took things seriously: for example, when Gou An scolded him earlier, she also called him an ‘idiot’1.

If it were someone else, her words might not be so elegant.

He didn’t remember Gou An ever looking at him like this before—

Contempt, disgust, and even a little tiredness.

Those almond-shaped pupils never seemed to have much majesty, but at this moment they made his heart skip a beat with anxiety.

Gou Xun looked at those eyes and suddenly turned around, avoiding them while grabbing Lu Wan’s arm, “Anyway, she has already apologized for her mistake, and the rest was not her fault. She didn’t mean to… to steal your love!”

“A’ Xun,” Jiang Yuan called her son’s name in a warning tone.

“That’s enough, Mom!” Gou Xun waved his hands impatiently, “This matter ends here, everyone’s even now!”

Gou Yu made a ‘tsk’ sound, as if he couldn’t stand his son’s stupidity. “Why are you acting as a referee here? Your sister hasn’t said anything yet.”

Gou An said, “I told him to get out—if he doesn’t get out, I’ll get out.”

Jiang Yuan turned to Gou Xun and said, “Then you should go away first.”

Gou Xun retorted, his voice loud, ”No way! What right does she have to act as a judge in such a condescending manner? Didn’t she do anything wrong at all? If you don’t have time to take care of the cat, then just leave it at home. She insisted on taking it on the cruise ship, but she couldn’t take care of it herself. Now she only knows how to blame others when it died!”

As he said this, he turned around and saw the blood quickly draining from his sister’s face. He suddenly stopped talking at that moment.

He hardened his heart and turned away.

Jiang Yuan was almost dumbfounded. She took one look at her daughter’s distraught look, and immediately reached out and hugged her. She looked like she wanted to find a feather duster and hit her brainless son.

In the midst of this chaos, Gou Xun said, “Young Teacher, let’s go,” and led Lu Wan out.

As he walked away, he turned around and shouted to the people in the room, “Anyway, I will invite Lu Wan to the coming-of-age ceremony next week. If you are unhappy about it, that’s your business. You will still meet her when you are supposed to—”

“Oh, yeah? Then you can just hold your coming-of-age ceremony at KFC!” Gou An struggled to get out of Jiang Yuan’s arms like a zombie, grabbed an apple and threw it at him, “What a shame!”

Only when she heard the sound of Gou Xun and Lu Wan getting into the car and leaving outside the door did she stand up, panting, and break away from her mother’s comforting arms.

It was afternoon outside, but the sunshine has disappeared at some point. The sky was covered with dark clouds and a drizzle began to fall. As autumn was approaching, the scent of the rain was filled with the fragrance of osmanthus.

Autumn has really arrived, and the tuberose flowers have all wilted.

Gou An took an umbrella from the porch, walked into the yard, and looked around in a daze.

The fat cat stretched out his paws, wagged his tail uncomfortably, and said firmly: [Don’t cry. ]

[Although you are stupid and noisy, and you can be a bit mean sometimes.]

[But don’t cry. You should cry only if you’ve done something bad. You didn’t—]

“Jiaojiao.”

The person standing in the rain suddenly called the cat’s name, interrupting its chattering.

[Meow?]

“I took you on board just so you could you see the sea, that’s all.”

[……]

[I know.]

The fat cat, as yellow as a banana, rolled around meowing.

[The sea is beautiful. Jiaojiao is one of the few kittens in the world who has seen the sea! Meow! Kakaka!]

The fat cat stopped rolling.

[Jiaojiao has never blamed you.]

After a pause of a few seconds, the fat cat added firmly, with its big tail hidden under its fat belly.

[Not even for a second.]

The big tail was pointed and raised.

[So, you are not allowed to cry.]

Under the transparent plastic umbrella, Gou An said ‘Oh,’, then raised her hand and wiped her face, “I’m not crying, stupid cat, are you blind?”

… …

Gou An stood in the yard, holding an umbrella in her hand and was in a daze for a while. Behind her, the door of the house was opened carefully from the inside, and after a few seconds, it was closed again—even the soft ‘thud’ sounded worried.

She didn’t look back. As always, she took the lead in comforting those who were worried about her, showing them that she was fine.

It was a lie.

She stood there like she had something to do.

Until the small fence in the yard of the villa was pushed open from the outside.

The man has changed into casual clothes and has probably taken a nap. His hair was no longer neat and tidy. One snag of disobedient hair was even standing up…

He looked at her through the rain, a black umbrella in hand.

Looking at her red eyes and tightly pursed lips, his gaze remained as calm as ever. After a while, he smiled and with an ambiguous tone.

“I’m here to give Miss Gou a business card.”

The man’s voice was calm.

“It seems that Miss Gou really needs it. After all, I’ve only had time to take a nap and she seems to have been bullied by someone again.”

  1. My vocabulary is not good enough to distinguish how one word for ‘idiot’ is more elegant than another 😂. But Gou An calls her brother ‘白痴’. ↩︎
