[ContrastTeamInADadW/BabyShow] Chapter 85.3 — Making Money

While everyone in the livestream channel was talking, giving their own opinions, Lin Cheng and Lin Momo had already returned to their residence with the things they purchased that morning.

Hu Mao’s family next door sold buns mainly during breakfast time in the morning and then again during dinner time in the evening. During the day, one person took care of the children at home, while the other took the tofu they made to sell it outside the vegetable market.

As it was, during the free time in the afternoon, their stove could be lent to Lin Cheng and Lin Momo.

There was not much time, so the two of them had to hurry.

With the help of his neighbor next door, Lin Cheng nailed a makeshift shelf using some wooden strips left over from yesterday’s reinforcement of the house, and then put the two cutting boards he had bought from the 2 yuan store on top of it to make a simple chopping counter.

After that, the dad and daughter divided the tasks and began working.

Lin Momo was responsible for washing the vegetables—the vegetables they bought were washed twice in the well water and then soaked in tap water.

Lin Cheng was responsible for cutting the vegetables into small pieces.

Seeing Lin Cheng’s relatively impressive knife skills, Hu Mao was a little surprised.

“Your knife skills are good. Did you learn this professionally?”

“Our family opened a small restaurant before, and we sold steamed buns,” Lin Momo said with a proud look on her face

Hearing this, Hu Mao smiled and nodded. Looking at the father and daughter in front of him, he felt a little emotional.

… …

Hu Mao had heard that there was going to be a celebrity family recording a program here. He wasn’t very interested in the beginning. He thought that it was just for showmanship.

Unexpectedly, the father and daughter who came here were not only not squeamish but also the kind of people who did things seriously.

Moreover, these two ‘celebrities’ got along well with others just like they were ordinary people.

This changed the Hu Mao family’s view on the word ‘celebrity’.

… …

After Lin Cheng finished chopping up the vegetables, he did not immediately add them to the bean dregs. Instead, he put each kind of vegetables separately in a gauze and squeezed them—filtering out the green, red, and orange vegetable juices.

Each vegetable pulp were then added to a different bowl which contained the bean dregs. Then eggs were beaten and added to each bowl, plus a little flour to increase the stickiness, some seasonings to taste, and finally mixed well together.

Lin Cheng put on gloves and divided the bean dregs into equal-sized portions, while Lin Momo pressed them into the mold.

The molding tools were actually the set of plastic toys they bought at a 2-yuan store. These were originally toys for molding clay or sand into cute shapes. Lin Momo saw that it was about the same size as what they needed, so she bought it.

Lin Momo laid a layer of plastic wrap on the inside of the mold, placed the dough in the middle, closed the molds firmly together and pressed hard. She carefully removed the excess dough on the edges.

Soon enough bean dregs dough in the shape of a cute cat head appeared.

In addition to the cat-head mold, there was also a smaller mold of a fat carp.

One large cat shape and one small fish shape—this meant they could make their bean dregs pancakes into two types.

“Dad, Dad, look, isn’t it super cute!” Lin Momo showed off two bean dregs dough to Lin Cheng, one large and one small.

“Not bad,” Lin Cheng smiled. He then gave the molded bean dregs a thin coating of flour and put them into the pan.

Soon, the surface of the pancake began to brown, and the aroma of fried bean dregs, mixed with the scent of flour and seasonings and a little vegetable flavor, began spreading.

“It smells so good,” Lin Momo whispered as she stood by the stove.

“Stand farther away,” Lin Cheng reminded.

“Ah, okay.” Lin Momo obediently took two steps back, but her eyes were glued to the pan.

Since the main ingredient of the pancake was bean dregs, the fried bean dregs pancakes would not bubble excessively. Therefore, after swelling just a little bit, the bean dregs pancakes still maintained the shape of cat-head and fat carp until they were taken out of the pan.

As their experience grew, the father and daughter became more and more skilled in their operation.

Soon more than thirty bean dregs pancakes had been fried and were waiting on the oil paper.

Residents from the houses nearby smelled the delicious aroma and came out to take a look. They were a little surprised to see the bean dregs pancakes that Lin Cheng and Lin Momo made.

“That looks good.”

“It’s quite cute like that.”

“Maybe someone would buy it if it’s made like this,” Hu Mao agreed.

… …

It wasn’t that their family had never thought about turning the bean dregs into pancakes for selling before, but it was really a bit time-consuming. They didn’t have that much time to do it since they also had to prepare to sell other things.

They also never thought to make bean dregs pancakes like this. Wrapping it with a thin layer of flour made the color of the pancake look more appetizing.

And Hu Mao never expected that the bean dregs pancakes could be made into such beautiful shapes.

… …

[It looks really good.]

[At first, when Momo bought the pack of plastic toys at the 2-yuan store, I thought they were for playing.]

[With a character like Momo’s, how can she spend money to buy toys, hahaha. But I also didn’t expect that Momo bought them to make molds.]

[I feel much better instantly when I see this.]

[These two people made the bean dregs pancakes so well that I can’t afford it anymore.]

[I was stunned, seeing this made me hungry.]

[Stop talking, I’m going to try the same style when I exit the livestream tonight!]

When Lin Cheng and Lin Momo finished making the bean dregs pancakes, they moved on to the next item.

They mixed the remaining bean dregs with flour and some starch, divided them into four parts, and used the vegetable juice that had been squeezed out earlier to naturally dye three of the portions into orange, red, and green shades. One portion was left in its original color.

The dad and daughter shaped the bean dregs into small balls then coated them in a thin layer of flour like before, and finally fried them in a pan.

These ‘meatballs’ were then stuck on bamboo skewers—four balls per stick.

All of these were made from bean dregs.

It took the two of them an entire afternoon to make a total of 120 bean dregs pancakes and 30 skewers of vegetarian meatballs.

They put the still warm bean dregs pancakes and meatballs into food-grade oil paper bags, and then put everything into a basket. Lin Cheng picked up the basket and took Lin Momo to the nearest market.

… …

While walking along the street outside Chaoyang Community, Lin Momo stopped for a moment, took out a few individually-packed bean dregs pancakes from their basket and quickly ran towards a particular bakery.

“Older sister,” Lin Momo called out to the shop clerk.

The shop clerk heard the sound and looked at the little girl in front of her. From the first glance, the clerk immediately recognized her. She and the person not far behind her were the father and daughter who had come here to buy their sample bread the night before.

“What’s up, kid?” the clerk asked Lin Momo with a smile.

Thinking that Lin Momo was here to try their sample bread again, the shop clerk looked at the display and prepared to get a bag so she could give some of it to Lin Momo.

However, before the shop clerk could take action, Lin Momo already took out her oil paper bags and handed them over to her.

“This is the bean dregs pancakes made by our family. It is very delicious. I will give it to you. Thank you for giving us bread that day.”

The clerk was a little surprised. When she took the bags and peeked inside, she saw deep-fried, golden brown bean dregs pancakes carefully packed inside. From the parts that she could see, she recognized half of a cat’s head and the shape of a fat carp.

“So cute,” the clerk sighed.

“Thank you.”

The clerk accepted the bean dregs pancake. She was about to give Lin Momo a small cake as a ‘thank you’, but Lin Momo said “Bye, older sister,” then turned around and ran to Lin Cheng waiting outside.

The figures of the father and daughter quickly disappeared down the street.

T/N: Okara or soybean dregs are a popular ingredient for vegan meatballs.

As for the bean dregs pancakes, I’m imagining something like this but cat-head shaped haha. I’d buy it 🥰

This is actually taiyaki but it is fat fish-shaped 😂
