[MarriageFirstLoveLater] Chapter 8.2 — Wednesday Night Phone Call

After drinking a cup of coffee, Qin Xing said goodbye.

Jian Hang also had an appointment in the afternoon. She motioned to Lin Xiao, “Go with me.”

“Where are we going?”

“Wanyue.”

In terms of work, Lin Xiao was mud who couldn’t support the wall1. In his own words, he was already a salted fish. Even if he gets reincarnated, he would still be a salted fish2.

But Jian Hang never gave up on him. As long as there was a new project, she always took him with her so he could broaden his horizons a little.

In Lin Xiao’s eyes, her kindness to him was a form of revenge, a way to make him wear small shoes3.

The last thing Lin Xiao did before going to bed every day was to play games and discuss tactics with Little Olive and Qin Xing. The first thing he did when he opened his eyes the next day was to pray for Jian Hang to be promoted and transferred soon.

If, one day, Jian Hang resigned and stopped working in Yinlin, he would definitely buy fireworks and set them off in the suburbs for three days and three nights of celebration.

Lin Xiao went back to his workstation, picked up his coat, and went downstairs with Jian Hang.

They encountered another colleague who was coming back from outside; she greeted Jian Hang, “Olive, hello.”

Lin Xiao felt like he was in a daze when he heard the name ‘Olive’—he couldn’t help but think of Little Olive. He secretly glanced at Jian Hang beside him. Why was there such a big gap between people? Little Olive was so good, and then there was this she-devil beside him.

Oh, well.

Lin Xiao couldn’t figure it out: how could his parents appreciate a woman like Jian Hang so much? His mother actually wanted Jian Hang to be her daughter-in-law and encouraged him to pursue her!

He really couldn’t bear the thought of pursuing Jian Hang, and besides, he wasn’t interested in a sibling relationship, thank you very much.

His mother said that having an accomplished older woman as a wife meant holding golden bricks. But forget it, did he want a gold brick to smash himself in the foot? If he was with Jian Hang, his happiness from now until the next life would be completely ruined.

Recently, Jian Hang received the marriage certificate, and his mother finally had to give up.

… …

On the way to Wanyue Group, Jian Hang read the information carefully. Lin Xiao, who was sitting next to her, sighed and pretended to also read the information.

The person in charge of Wanyue Group’s acquisition project was Zhong Yanfei. She was the daughter of Wanyue’s Chairman and the eldest daughter of the Zhong family. Zhong Yanfei was already married and has a younger sister named Zhong Yanyue.

Jian Hang didn’t know the two sisters from the Zhong family—it was Mr. Gao who made an appointment for her with Zhong Yanfei.

After making an appointment to meet at four o’clock, Jian Hang arrived at the lobby of Wanyue Group at 3:30 pm. At 3:50 pm, she and Lin Xiao went upstairs.

The person who received them was Zhong Yanfei’s assistant, Xiao Zhang. Xiao Zhang brought coffee and said, “Ms. Zhong is still in a meeting. Please wait a moment.”

At 4:20 pm, Xiao Zhang came in again and apologized, “There was a problem with a project, and Ms. Zhong rushed to the scene.”

The meaning couldn’t be more obvious. Zhong Yanfei didn’t have time to meet with them this afternoon.

Jian Hang smiled politely and said, “It’s okay. We’ll make another appointment for next time.”

Asking for an appointment next time was not a simple courtesy. She called Gao Yu on the way back and asked him to help make another appointment with Zhong Yanfei.

When Gao Yu heard that Zhong Yanfei had not seen Jian Hang, he immediately realized that it would be harder to win the Wanyue Group’s merger and acquisition project that they had originally thought.

It wasn’t Jian Hang’s first time around the block; she and Gao Yu both knew some things very well, and the two of them knew each other tacitly. Zhong Yanfei was Party A and had the advantage to decide whether or not to see someone or not.

As for why Zhong Yanfei didn’t see her, maybe something happened temporarily, or maybe Zhong Yanfei was interested in other financial institutions and had no intention of cooperating with Yinlin.

These were no longer important.

What concerned Jian Hang was whether she could successfully make an appointment with Zhong Yanfei for next time. Only by meeting Zhong Yanfei could she have a chance to win the project.

Gao Yu: “Leave this matter to me and I’ll make another appointment.”

Jian Hang returned to the company and dived into information about the project. The assistant ordered takeout for dinner. After eating, she continued to analyze the information. She was so busy that she didn’t pay attention to the time.

The mobile phone placed on the corner of the table vibrated. She glanced at the number and picked it up to answer it.

“What’s up?”

Qin Moling said quietly, “Today is Wednesday.”

Jian Hang looked at her watch: it was exactly half past ten. This time was the time they agreed to call each week, and she had long forgotten about it.

If it weren’t for the ring on her ring finger, she would even wonder if she was actually married.

“Ah, I got too busy.”

Jian Hang rubbed her forehead.

Qin Moling asked, “Still at the company?”

“Yeah.” Jian Hang picked up the water cup at hand and drank. The water had long lost any warmth it had.

Qin Moling was in the study room at home, a piece of paper in his hand. On it was the outline of his phone call tonight. He kept a pen beside him so he could jot down key points of what she would say.

“What have you been busy with these days?”

After asking, he picked up the pen.

Jian Hang made a helpless shrug. “I’m busy with work. I have three projects on hand, one of which is about to be completed. I’m currently busy trying to win a merger and acquisition project from Wanyue Group.”

“I go from one point to another in a straight line everyday: home and company. Besides work, there is still work.” She didn’t mention gaming. She had already planned to quit gaming for a month anyway, so there was no need to mention it.

Jian Hang stood up and took the cup to add hot water.

Qin Moling put down his pen. Her life was too monotonous, and there was nothing for him to remember.

He asked again, “No hobbies?”

There was actually—the game that he called ‘trifling destroys the will’ was her hobby. But she had no intention of telling him this.

Jian Hang thought for a while and then said, “There is one.”

“What hobby?”

“To make money.”

In addition to making money, she played games. Now that she didn’t play games, her only hobby was to make money.

Qin Moling had nothing to say.

There was a moment of silence.

It seemed that Jian Hang had nothing else to tell him. So he talked about what he had done these days, selecting only a few important things to tell her.

Similar to her, Qin Moling spent most of his time busy with work, but his spare time was richer than hers.

“I played cards with Jiang Shenghe at the club last night.”

Jian Hang knew Jiang Shenghe. When she was still at the Yinlin Capital headquarters, she had dealt with this business tycoon twice. Jian Hang asked casually, “Do you have a good relationship with him?”

“Yeah.” Qin Moling didn’t talk in depth. This call was to find out what he and Jian Hang had done over the past week. They were using it to deal with questions from their family members. It was enough to have a rough idea of some things so there was no need to talk in depth.

“When are you going home?”

Jian Hang poured a glass of warm water and sat back, “There are still more than a dozen pages of information. I’ll read it then go.”

Qin Moling looked at the time and estimated that it would be half past eleven when she finished her work. “It’s late. I’ll ask the driver to pick you up.”

Jian Hang refused, “Forget talking about the driver, it’s too troublesome.” But if he was the one to pick her up, she would wait at the company for him.

Qin Moling was not stupid, he could hear the subtext in her words: she wanted him to pick her up.

He has never been a driver for anyone, and he has never made a special trip to pick someone up.

But then he thought about it: Jian Hang was now his wife, no longer an insignificant stranger. Regardless of his feelings, he had the most basic responsibility and concern for her safety and wellbeing.

It was his responsibility to pick her up, not that he wanted to go.

After doing a good job of psychological construction and convincing himself, Qin Moling folded the paper outline on the table a few times with one hand, stuffed it into the drawer, and paused before saying, “Then you wait for me in the company.”

If It’s Wrong, Then It’s Wrong translated by Maela @ whitemoonlighttranslations.com

T/N: Don’t look at me—these two are talking through subtexts that I can’t catch. It seems that saying ‘no need to call the driver, it’s too troublesome’ apparently means ‘you come pick me up yourself, hubby!!’.

The problem with subtexts is that it’s as easy to miss the real intent as it is to catch it: case in point would be the Valentine’s ‘date’ that never happened.

  1. Mud that can’t support the wall’ literally it’s mud that’s too thin and watery and so it can’t be used to shore up the wall. As a metaphor it means to be unable to achieve success due to poor ability. ↩︎
  2. A salted fish is someone who lives an idle, carefree life, like salted fish who just lie there basking under the sun. ↩︎
  3. Wear small shoes, it’s the secret, little bullying that a person faces particularly in the workplace, or some petty grievances from your boss. It’s how shoes that are too small for your feet would pinch and hurt but would still look fine on the outside. ↩︎

  1. I think he is putting more effort than her in their relationship. While she is just waiting for him to start it.

  2. Reminds me of a song called “Read Between The Lines” by Tom Cardy.

As a neurodivergent who isn’t good at socializing and rarely does it, I hate subtext stuff. I am just not going to get it most of the time. Give it to me straight, please. Though with kind but not too obfuscated words.

I am a low context sort of person. Please, spare me this, “a sentence turns several corners” thing. Gimme a straight ball, please.

Also, I agree. This stuff makes misunderstandings so much more likely and seems like a waste of time if you’re not actively trying to scheme and trap someone.

  3. Beloved T/N your comments are spot on. And JH said it herself last chapter that they are both too proud to be forward with each other… too scared of being vulnerable I think
