She clicked on the hot search regarding purchasing methods and took a look. It turned out that it was not convenient for many people to come to Cloud Rise Temple, so they hoped to find scalpers to purchase on their behalf.
She thought for a moment and posted a new Weibo post: [This talisman is only valid for one month, and requires your name and date of birth. I won’t sell it to scalpers.]
Cloud Rise Temple was very popular now, with thousands of people coming every day to check in and ask for talismans. When things were selling well, scalpers were bound to get in on the action, hoping to make a huge profit.
But every aspiring scalper failed on Cloud Rise Temple.
As long as An Rugu calculated, the other party’s intentions would be clear.
As time went by, no scalpers went to Cloud Rise Temple anymore. It was now on the scalpers’ blacklist.

It was late autumn now. The weather was clear and crisp, the air was refreshing and made people feel relaxed.
An Rugu took a bite of the chestnut cinnamon pastry. From the first bite, the aroma of butter enveloping the cinnamon pastry was captivating.
When she took a bite, the aroma of glutinous rice and fragrance of osmanthus intertwined and lingered on the tip of her tongue. It was very elegant and refreshing.
“Delicious.” An Rugu’s expression remained unchanged, but she nodded immediately. “Your cooking skills are really good. Did you learn it from your master?”
“I added a little butter. It’s an improved version.” Shang Yue’s voice jumped with joy, as if she had thought of something, but also a little melancholy, “I don’t know if he has been reincarnated. I have to burn some paper money for him in a couple of days.”
An Rugu asked curiously, “Is he short of money?”
“He’d been dead for several thousand years, and no one was worshipping him anymore. I felt sorry for him and gave him some paper money, which made him so happy. He even held my hand and told me he wanted to teach me how to cook, and when I refused, he got angry with me.”
“Is that so?” An Rugu’s eyes swept across Shang Yue’s face. “By the way, who did you learn your cultivation from?”
When people try to get along with each other, the most taboo thing was to ask profound things without letting them say it themselves, so she didn’t ask much at the beginning.
Now that they were familiar with each other, An Rugu knew that Shang Yue was not a bad person, so she became interested and took the initiative to ask her about her life.
Normal ghosts were just wandering spirits that could vanish at any moment, but when she first met Shang Yue, she had already possessed cultivation. She was a true ghost cultivator.
“You’re asking that.” Shang Yue supported her face with a smile on her face, “I learned it from Seventh Master.”
The two words ‘Seventh Master’ have no context, and most people wouldn’t be able to understand them.
But An Rugu paused, a hint of surprise flashing in her eyes. “… the White Impermanence?”
The White Impermanence was named Xie Bian, known as the Seventh Master.
The Black Impermanence was named Fan Wujiu, known as the Eighth Master.
Apart from the White Impermanence, no one else in the Underworld would dare call himself the Seventh Master.
Shang Yue nodded. “That’s him.”
Seeing that An Rugu’s expression was a little different from usual, she curled her lips and said with a smile, “I only found out after I died that my ancestor was the wife of the Seventh Master, also known as Wuchang Po. At that time, I was thinking about waiting for Wang Ke, and I was reluctant to reincarnate. I was always bullied, so I went to cling to my ancestor’s thigh.”
An Rugu blinked, more than a little surprised. “…So they taught you the ghost cultivation method?”
“Yes, that’s a technique developed by Seventh Master. It can absorb the yin qi of heaven and earth and transform it into his own power. Seventh Master is very kind and has taught many people. None of them learned as well as I did. Seventh Master even praised me for my intelligence…”
As Shang Yue spoke, her eyes became a little vague and she stopped talking.
An Rugu took a sip of tea and understood what she meant.
Later, she escaped from the Underworld and came to the human world, hoping to seduce Wang Ke’s soul, which was definitely not what the White Impermanence and Wuchang Po wanted to see.
A hint of guilt crossed Shang Yue’s charming face, her eyes wandering. “If he catches me, I’ll definitely be skinned alive. I might even be thrown into Hell, where I’ll be burned by flames day and night, unable to live or die.”
An Rugu was curious, “You and him are related. If he was willing to teach you the ghost cultivation method, he shouldn’t treat you like this.”
However, Shang Yue slowly shook her head. “I know that the Seventh Master is kind, but the Eighth Master…”
Thinking of the Black Impermanence, she shuddered and shook all over. “He is so cruel. Those evil spirits will die quickly if they meet the Seventh Master, but if they meet the Eighth Master, they will definitely be thrown into Hell.”
An Rugu understood.
She has actually heard of the Black and White Impermanence from some records. It was said that the White Impermanence, Xie Bi’an, represented peace if one thanked the gods and was kind. The Black Impermanence, Fan Wujiu, represented the lawbreakers who were beyond redemption and was a vicious demon.
Now that she heard the personal account of a former resident of the Underworld, her impression of the Black and White Impermanence became even more profound.
“The more evil a ghost does, the more afraid they are of them.”
She looked up at An Rugu, patted her chest, and said with a smile, “Why am I telling you all this? They won’t crawl out of the Underworld anyway. Hahahahaha, why should I be afraid?”
An Rugu thought this made sense, so she said, “Right now, I’m the only living person in the entire Daoist temple. It’s not too late to worry about this matter when my time is up.”
When she dies, the envoys from the Underworld would come to take her soul, and there was a chance that she would encounter the Black and White Impermanence then.
I Livestream Divination to the World translated by Maela @ whitemoonlighttranslations.com
T/N: The Black and White Impermanence (Hei Bai Wuchang) are two important deities in Chinese folk religion. They are tasked to escort the dead to the Underworld. They are dressed in black and white, respectively. Impermanence here refers to the Buddhist concept that nothing remains the same and everything is constantly changing.
The White Impermanence name is Xie Bi’an which means ‘those who make amends will always be at peace”.
The Black Impermanence name is Fan Wujiu which means ‘those who commit crimes will have no salvation’.
Their titles ‘Seventh’ and ‘Eighth Master’ relate to their official posts in the larger bureaucracy of the Underworld.
As for Shang Yue’s ancestor, ‘Wuchang Po’ just means ‘Wife of Impermanence’ and is a title rather than a name. There doesn’t seem to be a fixed lore about a wife, so it may just be creative license by the author to give Shang Yue background.
The featured photo above is from a Danmei novel haha, Wuchang Jie.
As for this photo below, these are statues from Fengdu Ghost City (remember this? the 2,000 year old temple complex dedicated to Youdu that has now become a tourist attraction). As per their usual iconography, White Impermanence carries a fan, has a friendly expression, and is taller of the two. Black Impermanence has a chain and looks fierce.
