[DayTheEngagementWasBroken] Chapter 29.2 — The New Bodyguard

The novel began with the heroine Lu Wan and the young master of the He family named He Ran meeting each other because of the vicious female supporting character’s bullying (the red wine pouring incident). The author was at least very good in writing the first three chapters and everything was golden. In the first chapter, He Ran pulled Lu Wan—who had been doused with red wine—away from the bullying scene.

Next, He Ran found out that Lu Wan was his savior when he was kidnapped as a child, and his so-called fiancée was just an imposter. He soon developed a liking for this strong yet pitiful girl, and the two of them (ignoring the existence of the vicious female supporting character, the original fiancée) soon started a serious campus romance.

[Jiao Jiao: There is an interesting passage in the original text here. I think after reading it, you will understand why He Ran has always had special feelings for Lu Wan.]

This was a cliché story similar to the Little Mermaid.

[Paragraph 1:

The day after being beaten, it rained heavily outside, and the kidnappers suddenly realized that they didn’t need to cover He Ran’s head with a black cloth because He Ran couldn’t see anything at all.

During the kidnapping yesterday, he lost his eyesight due to a blow to the back of his head.

It was cold and damp, with the smell of mold and alcohol all around. All he could hear were the kidnappers cursing and saying things like “The He family called the police,” and “The Jiang family intervened, and the people from Linjiang Society are also looking for us.”

He was still young at the time and didn’t understand at all. He only knew that after these people finished complaining, they would kick him a few times to vent their anger.]

… …

[Paragraph 3:

He Ran escaped, and it was raining heavily outside.

He hadn’t showered for several days, and his clothes quickly got wet and stuck to his skin when he rushed into the rain. He felt cold and he ached all over, and his wounds were bleeding because he didn’t know how many times he has rubbed against sharp objects during his escape.

Was he going to be blind for the rest of his life?]

… …

[Paragraph 5:

He Ran felt that he might have a fever, and the air he exhaled from his nose was hot.

Before he fell unconscious, he heard the soft voice of a little girl the same age as him: Oh thank god, there’s someone here.

—I’m saved.

He Ran thought.]

… …

[Paragraph 7:

She didn’t tell him her name, but she appeared beside him at a fixed time every day and fed him warm porridge with a cold spoon.

Every day, she applied crushed herbs to the wound on the back of his head. They smelled bad but felt cool.

… …

[Paragraph 8:

To keep him from being bored, she would tell him stories. He had stopped listening to those boring, childish stories when he went to kindergarten.

But he didn’t ask her to stop.

… …

[Paragraph 9:

He Ran accidentally spilled the water and the glass shattered all over the floor.

The overwhelming feeling of frustration made him sit on the edge of the bed in a daze. From childhood to adulthood, he has never felt so desperate that he wanted to cry as he did now.

The person who had been taking care of him rushed in and just said, “Don’t move.” Then there was the sound of the dustpan scratching the floor.

The glass may have shattered too much, and he heard her let out a small cry of surprise in the process.

“What’s wrong?” He Ran sat up straighter. “Did it prick you?”

The person next to him didn’t say anything. After a while, a pair of equally short arms wrapped around him and gave him a hug, “I’m fine, don’t cry.”

Oh, was I crying?

He Ran thought, that was a secret that only she could see.]

… …

[Paragraph 12:

When he woke up one morning, He Ran suddenly found that he could see, and the smell of disinfectant surrounded him.

The smell was different from before.

But at this time He Ran didn’t take it to heart.

He woke up in the hospital. There were no adults around. The only person lying by the window was his neighbor and childhood sweetheart, his fiancée. She had fallen asleep, curled up by the bed, her fair face flushed from sleep.

He Ran kicked her awake. She opened her eyes dazedly and looked into the eyes of Young Master He. After a few seconds, her almond-shaped eyes widened. “Can you see?”

“…” He Ran asked, “I have been in the hospital these days? Are you the one taking care of me?”

Gou An was silent for two seconds and then hmmed.

He Ran suddenly asked again, “So, who is Shuke’s partner?”

Gou An: “?”

Gou An: “Beita who drives a tank?”

Oh.

It’s really her.

He Ran was silent for a moment. Although he felt that something was not right, he decided to be nicer to Gou An in the future, at least not to laugh at her for being stupid when she tripped while walking.]

… …

At this point, Gou An could no longer bear it and was so ashamed that she wanted to die.

But her cat wouldn’t let her go.

[Jiao Jiao: Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha is this true or not? Is there something wrong with He Ran’s brain? The way he identified his savior was to ask “Who is Shuke’s partner?” He could have been even more stupid and asked “Was it grandpa or grandma who watered the Calabash Brothers?”!]

Gou An’s face was full of black lines, but she could not deny that Young Master He and Lu Wan seemed to have indeed spent a warm and special week together as children.

… …

But the white moonlight was already a thing of childhood. Even though those seven days were an unforgettable experience for He Ran, life always moved forward, and with his personality, he would not be shaken at all just because of those seven days—

He Ran was still an unreliable, rich, second-generation guy who already had a fiancée yet still attracted women around him. In the process of getting along with He Ran, there were several coincidences where Lu Wan was helped by He Ran’s young uncle, the male protagonist He Jinxing.

It started with two encounters in the campus corridor, and she developed a vague liking for him.

The situation deepened after that night when she was working part time. Lu Wan, who was on the verge of breaking up with He Ran, was harassed by a group of second-generation rich people led by the vicious female supporting character right under He Ran’s nose (Gou An: Hello, author, are you okay?? I didn’t do that, don’t talk nonsense!). She ran in the corridor and bumped into He Jinxing, falling into his arms.

Lu Wan, holding onto He Jinxing, burst into tears, her heart pounding.

… …

Gou An paused from reading.

Gou An: Looking back at what has happened, it all just feels so outrageous. Why do we have to force more scenes for the vicious female supporting role? She’s innocent!

The fat cat’s tail in her mind kept wagging.

[Jiao Jiao: Read more, you will no longer be innocent.]

All of the above happened in the first five chapters of the story and was just the prelude. In the sixth chapter, the novel formally entered the domineering CEO romance literature—

He Ran was indeed the most despicable man in the whole book.

He Ran gradually realized that Lu Wan seemed to have changed her mind and tried to rekindle her passion for him. He pestered her and helped her pay for the surgery of her grandmother and solved her problems…

He got Lu Wan’s forgiveness.

The two of them overcame all difficulties and obtained the He family’s reluctant consent. He Ran was able to cancel his original engagement with the vicious female supporting character and was about to get engaged to Lu Wan.

At this time, the vicious female supporting character’s younger brother, Gou Xun, would attend a coming-of-age ceremony on a luxury cruise ship, along with Jiangcheng’s other rich, second-generation kids of the same age.

He Ran had previously introduced Lu Wan to Gou Xun as a tutor in order to help Lu Wan earn money, and she has already conquered this younger brother of the vicious female supporting character…. And so, even though Lu Wan was a thorn in the side of the vicious female supporting character, she was naturally on the guest list for this feast.

When the vicious female supporting character learned about this, she was furious.

… …

Gou An: What the hell? Gou Xun really invited Lu Wan to the coming-of-age ceremony next week?!

Gou An: … I’m so angry!

[Jiao Jiao: ……]

[Jiao Jiao: Are you perhaps worried that some punctuation marks are not being performed according to the book?]

… …

On the yacht, the vicious female supporting character who vowed to bring ruin to Lu Wan’s reputation (……??) drugged Lu Wan.

Originally, she was only trying to scare her and teach her a lesson. To ensure that there would be no additional trouble (the vicious female supporting character still had some legal awareness, although not much), she drugged her and locked her in her own lounge to ensure that no one would come—

Unexpectedly, He Jinxing, who was also slightly drunk that night, walked into the wrong room.

He Jinxing concealed the fact that the two of them spent the night alone in the same room, but unfortunately, He Ran still found out.

Although Lu Wan cried and told him that nothing happened between her and He Jinxing, He Ran didn’t believe it and couldn’t bear to have such a big cuckold sign on his head.

He Ran had already successfully persuaded his family to prepare an engagement banquet, but in order to publicly slap Lu Wan in the face, he ran away on the day of the engagement banquet.

… …

Gou An: Oh wow!

[Jiao Jiao: …You didn’t want to read it before because it was disgusting, who’s enjoying it now?]

Gou An: C’mon. Isn’t this plot, with so many ups and downs, worthy of an exclamation of ‘Oh wow!’?

[Jiao Jiao: Do you really want to see ups and downs? You just want to see the heroine get into trouble.]

T/N: The Adventure of Shuke and Beita is a Chinese animated series that aired in late 1980s featuring 2 mice who didn’t want live by stealing food and so pursued their own careers. Shuke is a pilot and Beita is a tank driver.

They got revamped in 2019. I think they look cute haha.

The Calabash Brothers is a popular Chinese animated series that also aired in late 1980s.

The question ‘Was it grandpa or grandma who watered the Calabash Brothers?’ is silly because there was no grandma at all in the story—just a kind grandpa who watered 7 calabash who grew up to be 7 brothers.
