[ILivestreamDivination] Chapter 7.2 — Five-Emperor Coins

After Zhang Wen found her brother, she thanked An Rugu. “Thank you, master, for helping me find my brother.”

An Rugu thought about her younger brother’s traits and said, “Your younger brother is smart, not much worse than you, but he loves to play. Do you know what he will become when he grows up like this?”

Zhang Wen thought for a while, but it was hard to say. “He will definitely become a teenager with an Internet addiction.”

It’s already in its infancy!

In her eyes, there was an image of a gangster boy who dropped out of junior high school, and that was what her younger brother would look like in the future.

She wanted Mom and Dad to never allow him to play games ever again!

An Rugu shook her head slowly. “Your younger brother’s eight characters devours wealth and is suitable for working in the technology industry. Playing games actually focuses on researching the logic behind it. If nothing unexpected happens, he should make achievements in game design in the future.”

Zhang Wen’s eyes lit up and said, “That’s not bad.” The gaming industry was quite profitable.

An Rugu said again, “But as you can see, your brother has a mischievous personality and does things recklessly, so he still needs to be properly restrained.”

“I understand, thank you, Master,” Zhang Wen said with sincere gratitude. “By the way, Master, can I also go to Cloud Rise Temple to offer incense? It’s located in the western suburbs of Nancheng, is that right?”

Zhang Wen had previously seen An Rugu’s suggestion to offer incense. Her heart was moved with all that had happened, and she, too, wanted to come to offer incense in person. After all, An Rugu was so good at divination!

“You can.”

After finishing the two divinations, she looked at the camera, counted the time online with her fingers, and said calmly, “Today’s livestream is over.”

Then, under the reluctant eyes of the audience, the livestream was closed.

… …

Counting from the start of the livestream, she has been livestreaming for four and a half hours. The conversations with predestined people were actually not long—most of the time was spent looking for people.

However, the response was very good. There were already 1,153 followers on the [Welcome the Sun, Rise from Clouds] account; there were two pilgrims who wanted to come to Cloud Rise temple to offer incense face-to-face, and she was rewarded more than 100,000 yuan in Shark platform gifts…

All in all, it was a very profitable day.

But she hasn’t signed a contract with Shark Platform yet, so the money cannot be withdrawn.

An Ru was not in a hurry to sign the contract. It wasn’t that she’s waiting until the popularity of her livestream channel became higher, thinking that the contract offered by the platform would be better then.

Because there was a lot of emphasis on the rewards of divination, the money earned from divination itself is full of karma. The fortune teller reveals the secrets of the heavens through divination, and will inevitably face backlash. An Rugu has a way to resolve it for herself, but if someone else takes the money she earned from divination—then they may not necessarily be able to resolve it.

She withdrew her thoughts from this matter and turned off her laptop. The configuration of her laptop was considered good when she first bought it, but the replacement rate of electronic products was very fast, and the computer that she has been using for four years was already a bit old.

The picture quality was not particularly good, and the operation was also a bit slow sometimes.

She turned on her phone, picked out a suitable desktop computer, as well as livestreaming equipment such as cameras and microphones.

Afterwards, An Ru got up, took a broom, and began to clean the Daoist temple. The Daoist temple was truly deserted, with only a gentle breeze to play with her, which is also a kind of quiet enjoyment.

When it was time to clean up the storehouse, she opened a box with the intention of clearing it up and saw that it was full of ancient coins. Ancient coins passed through the hands of countless people when they were still in circulation, and they have accumulated their own yang energy. In the past, there was a custom of using old copper coins to drive away evil spirits and attract blessings.

Every master of the Cloud Rise Temple would store some money in the box like a hamster. Rare things were always precious. This money was of little value at the time, but it was of great significance today. If people who like to collect ancient coins see this money box, they will probably die of envy.

These ancient coins were already antiques, they have a price but no available market, and they are not things that can be traded simply with money.

These ancient coins are all similar, round on the outside and square on the inside, oxidized for thousands of years, rusted to the bone, and the name of the emperor who minted it is written on its face like a pattern.

An Ru glanced at a ban liang from the Qin Shihuang period from the corner of her eye. She reached in and rummaged through the money box, the ancient coins jingling through her fingers.

She had an idea and suddenly became interested. Ancient coins can exorcise evil spirits and attract good fortune. If they can be made into five-emperor coins, the energy will be even more extraordinary.

Five-emperor coins was a powerful feng shui artifact. The five-emperor coins can be divided into two classes: the minor five emperors and the great five emperors.

The minor five-emperor coins are the coins of the five emperors of the Qing Dynasty.

The great five-emperor coins are the ban liang in Qin Shihuang’s period, wuzhu from Emperor Wu of Han period, kaiyuan tongbao from Emperor Taizong of Tang period, yuan tongbao from Emperor Taizu of the Song period, and yongle tongbao from Emperor Chengzu of the Ming dynasty.

The ancient coins of the great five emperors have been unearthed in smaller quantities, resulting in their rarity.

But this was not a problem for Cloud Rise Temple. It didn’t take much effort for An Ruzhi to find the five ancient coins that made up the great five-emperor coins.

Her eyes flickered, and the scene in front of her was completely different from what ordinary people saw. She could see the five coins exuding different energies.

She found a red thread and strung the five coins one by one. The moment she tied off the red thread, the surface of the five coins seemed to have been lifted off a layer of cloth, gleaming light for a brief moment, before changing back to its previous appearance, as if nothing had happened.

This was the manifestation of the formation of a spiritual weapon.

An Rugu’s eyes fell on the five-emperor coins. The energy of the great five-emperor coins was much greater than that of the minor five-emperor coins—almost twenty times as much.

The great five-emperor coins was done!

As for why it held energy and didn’t dissipate…

In fact, it was because the five copper coins had a round edge, representing the heavens, and an inner square, representing the earth—the perfect representation of the law of heaven and earth. They gather the energy of the five elements and naturally retain the energy between heaven and earth.

… …

As she examined the first five-emperor coins she ever made, the sound of shoes tapping across the ground came from far to near. The steps walked in a hurry, as if the person was very anxious.

The village chief hurriedly ran up the mountain. For the first time, he felt that the sixty-six steps he was used to walking up and down were so long. As soon as he saw An Rugu, he immediately shouted, “Xiaogu, come and see my granddaughter.”

“What’s wrong?”

“My granddaughter is bewitched!”

T/N: Yang energy comes from the living. Coins, being constantly touched by living people, get imbued with yang energy and can be used to drive away beings full of ying energy, like evil spirits.

Five-emperor coins are, quite literally, 5 coins with the emperor’s name stamped on its face, threaded together with red thread. There is a square hole in the middle of each coin, which makes tying them together possible. People wear them on their body or places they want to gather auspicious, protective energy like the entrance hallway or inside the car.

The ‘five great emperors’ spanned dynasties from 221 BCE until 1644, when the final dynasty—the Qing dynasty—came into power (1644-1911). A quick google search shows that most five-emperor coins for sale are the ‘small’ five-emperors, all from the Qing dynasty.

The text calls the 5 Qin emperors ‘small’ but they are quite renowned in their own right and are only ‘small’ in comparison to the legendaries. They supposedly ruled through peaceful, progressive eras when the populace enjoyed many benefits which is why their coins are considered auspicious.

The  Ban Liang that An Rugu first touched and which gave her the idea of crafting 5-emperor coins is Chinese currency minted as early as 378 BCE. It was made into the first unified currency by the first Chinese Emperor, Shihuang of the Qin dynasty, in 210 BCE.

Side note, Qin Shihuang was the first to use the term ‘huangdi’ or ‘emperor’; prior to this, rulers were called ‘wang’ or ‘king’, confusing newbie c-novel translators and readers all over because ‘wang’ is now used in English for ‘prince’—the son of the ‘emperor’—even though it still literally means ‘king’
