幽都 Youdu—literally ‘Dark Capital—is the capital city of the Underworld, the realm of the dead, or Diyu 地狱. The Underworld is often translated as ‘Hell’ but it’s a Chinese folklore slash Buddhist concept and doesn’t quite equate to ‘hell’ as Christians would know it. Better to just think of it as the place where the souls of the dead go (then they get processed, get punished, fed soup of forgetfulness, go through reincarnation, etc.. Or in the case of Shang Yue—hang around for 400 years and learn how to cook out of boredom). As the capital of the Underworld, Youdo is a pretty scary place for the living.
Youdo—the organization of evil cultivators that Fang Ruoshui joined—took their name from that place. It’s why Lin Weiyu said how these people weren’t even afraid of King Yan—the god of death, judge of souls, and Lord of the Underworld. Traditionally, he is the scariest guy in the pantheon.
Fengdu is a real county in China; it’s traditionally thought of as related to Youdo. Almost 2000 years ago, the Fengdu Ghost City was built—it’s a shrine complex dedicated to the Afterlife, modeled after Youdu. In this modern age, the Fengdu Ghost City has become a tourist attraction complete with guided tours and cruise boats.
An Rugu was asking if there was a relation between the evil organization Youdu and the Fengdu Ghost City. A local would understand what An Rugu meant with her one line but we need all this to explain lmao.
