[ILivestreamDivination] Chapter 18.6 — Past and Present Lives

Because of her emotional collapse, her immobilization spell also lost its effect and everyone was finally able to move again. The masters firmly grasped their magical weapons, but they had seen the strength of the female ghost earlier so they didn’t dare to get too close now. Instead, they quietly started heading towards the corner.

These people who retreated looked around at each other and found that the others were as timid as themselves, and embarrassed smiles appeared on their faces.

Wang Ke’s parents tried hard to suppress the fear they felt from facing the female ghost and hugged Wang Ke tightly.

But Wang Ke himself only looked at the beautiful and gentle female ghost in front of him; his expression was in a trance, and he was a little out of his wits.

An Rugu looked at the collapsed female ghost and vaguely guessed some truth in her heart.

Had the female ghost had studied economics, she would know why she was so obsessed with being with Wang Ke.

Sunk costs.1

Because the sunk cost was now too high, this gambler had already lost all her underwear, but she still wanted to continue gambling, eyes red with tears. She didn’t want to accept, and cannot accept, the reality that she has already lost everything.

After such twists and turns, the sky was slowly getting brighter, and bright sunlight during the day was directly harmful to ghosts.

An Rugu unexpectedly picked up the still crumpled female ghost.

“You come back to the Daoist temple with me.”

Afterwards, An Rugu took the luggage she had just packed and prepared to leave the villa.

Although everyone had stayed up all night, they had no intention of sleeping now, their spirits still extremely excited.

Seeing this, Zhang Ling hurriedly asked her to stay, “Master, don’t leave.”

“Just credit the money to my account,” An Rugu said.

Zhang Ling and his wife: “…”

Other experts: “…”

Zhang Ling quickly said, “Ah, yes! Yes, but we haven’t treated you well yet, why don’t you stay and have a meal first?”

After what happened just now, Zhang Ling was able to clearly see that this person, who did not show her mountains and dews at all, was a real master!

She quietly looked at the other masters next to her and secretly sighed in her heart. These masters were only like ordinary people when they encountered the female ghost—they couldn’t even move! They were too inferior.

The experts: “…”

That was a four-hundred-year-old female ghost with high cultivation ah!

But the masters dared not speak out. After all, it was true that they really didn’t contribute anything.

An Rugu looked back, looked at Zhang Ling in surprise, and raised the female ghost who was still in a trance, doubting her life, “You want to invite her for a meal?”

Zhang Ling smiled awkwardly, “I don’t dare.”

An Rugu nodded, “Then I will take her back.”

Zhang Ling agreed, then raised her intention, “Master, do you still have the five-emperors coins? I want to buy a few more.”

She had seen it just now: once the five emperor coins were thrown out, the female ghost’s hands were immediately burned off! It was so powerful that she had to give one to all her family.

An Rugu looked at the five emperor coins held in Wang Ke’s hand. “This one can be sold to you, but the others need to be bought at Cloud Rise Temple.”

Zhang Ling agreed repeatedly, and then said, “Master, this place is a bit far from Cloud Rise Temple, I will ask the driver to take you back.”

An Rugu accepted, then turned and left the villa.

Still holding the five-emperor coins, Wang Ke quietly looked at the female ghost grasped in An Rugu’s hand, hesitated to speak, and finally, did not speak at all.

Because the yin energy of the night had already dissipated, and the female ghost herself didn’t want to be seen, the driver and passers-by only saw An Rugu’s slightly raised hand beside her, but they didn’t know that she was holding the female ghost’s clothes in her seemingly empty hands.

The female ghost was now more sad than heartbroken, was doubting her life, and didn’t care about her own situation anymore.

But An Rugu still wanted to save her, so just save her.

When An Rugu approached the Daoist temple, the female ghost finally reacted. She turned pale with shock and begged, “Daoist priest, please don’t take me in!”

In Daoist temples were enshrined true gods, and a ghost like her would enter? Wasn’t that simply courting death?

The female ghost trembled in fear. “Please, master, although it is difficult to be reincarnated in the Underworld, I can still get in if I work hard. I don’t want to be wiped out!”

However, An Rugu ignored her wishes and led her straight ahead. The female ghost wanted to break free, but she couldn’t break free at all, as tragic as a white crane dragged to her death.

She closed her eyes, and after a moment’s reflection, she thought that she would have no memories if she were reincarnated anyway, so in that sense, it wouldn’t be much different from being wiped out.

However, after a long time, she still didn’t feel any pain. It wasn’t until she opened her eyes curiously that she realized that she was already inside the Daoist temple.

An Rugu looked down at the female ghost lying on the ground trembling all over. “What’s your name?”

An Rugu had put her own mark on the female ghost earlier so the god enshrined in the Daoist temple would not do anything to her.

Seeing that the other party didn’t want to harm her, the female ghost breathed a sigh of relief, and replied honestly, “My name is Shang Yue.”

“Shang Yue, then I will send you back to the Underworld now2. You didn’t make any big mistakes as a ghost. You should be able to have a good rebirth and not fall into the animal realm.”

Hearing this, Shang Yue pinched the corner of her clothes, looked up at An Rugu with hope in her eyes and said, “Master, can you not send me back?”

“Why, you still want to find that person?”

Shang Yue quickly shook her head, “No, I definitely don’t. I’ve already thought about it. The two of them are not the same person anymore. It’s meaningless to continue our entanglement.”

The most important thing was… Wang Ke was too ugly now, so ugly that she didn’t want to look at him at all, and even doubted her own eyesight!

“Then what do you want to do?”

Shang Yue answered truthfully, “If you send me down to the Underworld now, I have to queue again. It may take hundreds of years for them to get to me.”

An Rugu was a little curious. “That long? What’s going on?”

As a person who experienced the Underworld, Shang Yue was very clear about the Underworld’s affairs and explained, “There are too many ghosts in the Underworld, but now there are too few newborn babies, and there are not many opportunities for rebirth. It’s not possible to send those who need to be reincarnated into the animal realm, so souls have to wait in line. The line is getting longer and longer every year. If I start to line up now, I am afraid it will take more than two hundred years for it to be my turn.”

And the Underground was truly too cold and lonely, far inferior to the fireworks in the human realm, so Shang Yue didn’t want to go to the Underworld.

An Rugu: “…”

FOOTNOTE:

  1. In economics, sunk cost is a cost that has already been incurred and cannot be recovered—like the many years that the female ghost spent waiting for her husband. The rational decision faced with a losing proposition would be to cut your losses, and move on. But people (and ghosts apparently!) are not rational, so she insisted on marrying him even if she has to hook his unwilling soul to get him (and thus become evil) because she has already waited this long. ↩︎
  2. The translation is actually ‘I will “save” you now‘, but it means that An Rugu wants to send her to the Underworld so she could reincarnate, as opposed to ‘exorcising’ her which would completely dissipate her soul and she would cease to exist ↩︎
