The predestined person <Step Into Science>’s face froze, and he smiled dumbly at the camera.
The person who came to see him was not a child in a doll costume but a weasel? Was this true or not?
Yes… he has never seen a weasel. He has never encountered one in his hometown when he was a child, and he didn’t learn about them when he was growing up. He really didn’t know what a weasel looked like.
He couldn’t help but open the browser and search for weasels. A photo of weasels popped up on the page, making his eyesight go dark.
All right then.
It turned out that the creature he saw was not a thin child in a yellow dog suit at all but a weasel standing up!
The color drained from his face, and he trembled all over. The inquisitive spirit in his bones made him subconsciously ask, “Host, what is the principle of asking for a title?”
The tone was full of trust, completely opposite to how he sounded before.
Seeing that he didn’t understand, An Rugu’s eyes moved slightly and explained, “Asking for a title means to be approved and certified as such. Humans are the most intelligent beings. When weasels reach a certain level of cultivation, they need the approval of humans before they can transform into the form of a human being. This is the principle of titling.
“It will ask you whether it looks like a human or not. If you answer that it looks like a human, then it can cultivate into human form and will repay you in the future. If you answer it does not look like a human being, it will fall short in its cultivation, and all its power will dissipate.
“Weasels often seek revenge when they are angry. If you have broken its decades or even hundreds of years of cultivation, it will usually come to retaliate against you.”
In fact, it wasn’t just weasels that ask for titling—many animals do this. Among them, the legend of Liu Bang being drunk and beheading a snake was the most famous.
According to legend, at the end of the Qin Dynasty, a snake spirit in the Central Plains region has reached a high level of cultivation, so it went to the middle of the road to ask for a title. But everyone who sees such a large snake would inevitably be afraid, and they all ran away when they saw it.
Seeing that no one was willing to give him a title, the snake spirit kept his mouth shut and understood that the opportunity to transform was simply not there. He was about to turn around and leave, but then he felt an emperor’s aura getting closer and closer. It turned out that Liu Bang was passing by—very much drunk.
The spirit snake wanted to be bestowed a title, but Liu Bang was drunk and reckless. He directly cut off the opponent in his path with his sword.
The spirit snake failed to seek a title and instead died. It disappeared, but its soul remained. At night, it entered Liu Bang’s dream and asked him to return its life.
Liu Bang dreamed that he was leading troops to fight. After listening to the spirit snake begging him to return its life, Liu Bang responded casually, “The mountains and steep ridges here are high, and I am busy traversing the mountain road. How can I give you a life? Let’s talk about it later when I get to flat lands.”
It meant to go out of the mountain and then talk about it later. Liu Bang woke up and found that he was fine. He never had this dream again, so he just forgot about it.
Later, the Han Dynasty prevailed for more than 200 years, until it passed to the hands of child Emperor Ping. The Regent, Wang Mang, poisoned the child emperor to death. Emperor Ping is the ‘flat land’. Wang Mang is the ‘dead python’.
Therefore, there was a legend among the people that Liu Bang killed the python and the Emperor Ping paid for it with his life.1
… …
[I see, it seems my esoteric knowledge has increased again.]
[I remember someone asked which family the child-who-turned-out-to-be-a-weasel was from. This should be considered a success in asking for a title, right?]
[Which family—this phrase does imply that the other party is human.]
… …
An Rugu caught a glimpse of these comments and said with a calm expression, “You can’t answer questions with questions. You have to face the other party and answer them directly. Does he look like a human or not like a human? This is not an acceptable way to answer questions.”
<Step Into Science> was stunned, and his mind was now in a mess. “So my bad luck, is it because it lost its cultivation so it’s taking revenge on me?”
He really wanted to complain that the weasel had made him unlucky, but then he thought about it—it seemed quite miserable for it to have lost its many decades of cultivation.
An Rugu lowered her eyes and said noncommittally, “Actually, if yao qi is attached to you for whatever reason, you will generally be unlucky. It may not necessarily be that it is seeking revenge on you. What exactly did you say to it that day?”
<Step Into Science> raised his hand and smacked his head, thinking hard, “I drank too much that day. Let me think about it…. It seemed to have asked me again whether it looked like a human or not.
“It was getting too late at that time, so I asked him to go home early and not wander around alone on the road.
“But it still raised its hands and bowed to me, as if it didn’t want to do anything at all except stand there and ask me questions.
“So I then asked it if it had finished its homework?
“It scratched its head and said it had no homework.
“I said that education should start from childhood. How many points did it get in Chinese, Mathematics, and English in the last exam? Did it get 300 points?
“It touched its melon-skin cap and seemed very distressed, saying it couldn’t understand what I was saying.
“I just felt it was very weird, asking over and over if it looked like a human being, and I thought it felt a bit passive and withdrawn from the world. I thought that maybe it was a left-behind child for many years and its experience has caused some psychological problems.”
… …
[??? Why is the predestined person so imaginative?]
[Actually, some children love to fantasize very much and enjoy living in a make-believe world of their own construction.]
[I am a psychiatrist. Some people with mental illness will imagine that they are an animal, and they will exhibit behavior abnormalities, which is called zoanthropy.]
… …
Predestined guest <Step Into Science>s saw this barrage and sighed, “There are almost no children in our village, which made me very lonely when I was a child. I could only play with the yellow dog at home every day.
“That night, I looked at it and it was as if I had seen myself in the past. I couldn’t help but teach it earnestly, so that it could study hard, pass the exam and go to the city like I did.
“I study science, and I wanted to make science more interesting for it. So I just asked it, have you ever heard of Darwin, Franklin, Planck, and Einstein?
“I explained Einstein’s mass-energy formula, because this formula hides the truth of the world. Moreover, his special theory of relativity unified the two systems of Newtonian mechanics and Maxwell’s electrodynamics. In short, he was a very powerful scientist.
“I just hoped that it would not indulge in the game of asking whether it looks like a human being all day long, but that it can become such a human being in the future.”

T/N: Ahhh! We are finally back online! The last post is just a few weeks shy of one year ago—I got a bit overwhelmed by life. Hope you’re all still reading this. It was also my birthday last Saturday so yey double celebration!
Yellow in Chinese encompasses shades of orange as well as what we would call tan or brown. It’s not usually associated with the sun, but with earth. I guess it’s like how ‘ao’ in Japanese is blue—but also kinda green.

Chapter 56.3 — Weasel Asking for a Title
Chapter 56.4 — Weasel Asking for a Title

FOOTNOTE:
- This is a play on words. Liu Bang is the founder and first emperor of the Han dynasty. Some 200 years later, child Emperor Ping was the last, killed by Wang Mang. The context here is that ‘Emperor Ping’ is homonym for ‘flat lands’ in Chinese. And ‘Wang Mang’ is homonym for ‘dead python’. Ba-dum-tss! ↩︎
