T/N:  Xue Pinggui and Wang Baochan are a couple in a well-known folk tale. Their story was featured in a popular 2012 TV series, ‘Love Amongst War’. Xue Pinggui was from a poor family and Wang Baochan, daughter of the prime minister, married him over her father’s objections, leading her to cut off ties with her wealthy family. The man went off to war, leaving his poor wife to survive by digging wild vegetables. She was faithful and waited for his return. He, on the other hand, garnered honors in war, married the princess of the defeated kingdom, had children with her, and eventually became their king. 18 years later, he goes back to his first wife and enthrones her as his queen. 

I think the point was her steadfast love and loyalty…. The good thing is that this story is ‘bit not good’ for the current generation in China. In 2022, the meme of Wang Baochan digging wild vegetables became popular as a symbol for people with ‘love brains’. The actress who played the character commented ‘although love is sweet, I hope that women don’t lose themselves. May every woman have a perfect ending to their stories.’
