[EngagementWasBroken] Chapter 14.1 — The Gears of Fate Rumble

He Ran officially announced his fiancée on WeChat Moments: Gou An.

Everything seemed perfectly legitimate.

Lu Wan took the last bus home.

On the bus, she cried all the way holding her cell phone, the screen open to the WeChat Moments post.

Tears flowed like flood as she watched mutual friends post good wishes for He Ran and Gou An in the comment section of He Ran’s post.

It took some time before the bus wobbled its way to her home.

The area where Lu Wan’s home was located was some distance from Jiangcheng A University. In fact, normal university students usually stayed in the dormitory, but most of young men or young ladies from wealthy families were not willing to live in such dilapidated dormitories. As for Lu Wan, she didn’t live in the dormitory because her nights were also very busy.

She was constantly traveling between the hospital and various temporary jobs.

Lu Wan had cried so hard that her eyes was swollen. She wiped her tears and got off the bus in a daze. Her long hair was a little messy and stuck to her face. Her originally beautiful face looked even more pitiful now.

The phone rang, startling her, and she thought it might be He Ran. She bit her lower lip and picked it up to took a look, only to realize that it was the hospital.

“Hello, is this Miss Lu? We may have found a suitable candidate here. I wonder if you would consider the surgery for your relative, Ms. Lu Linlang? If you agree to the surgery, please come to the hospital tonight to sign the papers and pay the deposit first—“

After the initial surge of ecstasy, her brain grew blank at the astronomical cost of the surgery.

Lu Wan reached out to grab a cab and rushed to the hospital, signed the papers, and felt as if she was dreaming.

[The deposit for the operation fee is 50,000 yuan. We will wait for you for up to 48 hours. Please understand. Young miss, we know that it is not easy for you, but you must also understand that there are many people with financial strength waiting in line behind you—— ]

The words of the doctor on duty echoed in her mind. After a night full of ups and downs, Lu Wan was so stressed that she couldn’t breathe.

Reason told her to call He Ran immediately and tell him that she’s willing to take the money that the He family had promised to give her for the life-saving grace, and all the money problems would be solved…

But when she took out her phone, she realized that she had just deleted He Ran from her list of friends.

Along with all their mutual friends.

It was like fate was playing tricks on her.

Tomorrow was the last day of regular classes. He Ran was a graduating student and may not necessarily be in school every day. What’s more, he mentioned before that he would be in the college basketball league soon, so he would be very busy during this period…

She didn’t know where to contact the He family to get the money, so she had no choice but to find a way to make up for the gap for now.

Unknowingly, she had already walked to Endless Night’s doors.

Jiangcheng was an open port city and this was its largest pleasure place. Endless Night gathered together all kinds of luxurious entertainment activities… She heard that people inside opened wine bottles for 120,000 yuan, and the treatment they received from the establishment was probably just a free parking ticket for the night—not even enough to be included in the honor roll.

Lu Wan stood at the door for a while, went around to the back alley, took out her mobile phone and made a call. Then she stood there in a daze.

Five minutes later, the broken iron door in Endless Night’s back alley opened from the inside, and a young man about 25 years old and wearing jeans walked out.

He had a shaved head, but it could not stop people from being shocked by his beautiful features, it’s only that his overly dark eyes almost melted into the night, adding a hint of ruthlessness to his young and handsome face.

Even passers-by could easily sense the dangerous flavor.

He walked up to Lu Wan expressionlessly and stood still, “What’s wrong?”

His voice was low and slightly hoarse, as if he hadn’t spoken for several hours. One could easily guess: he wasn’t a very talkative person.

Hearing his voice, Lu Wan’s shoulders trembled slightly; she raised her head and glanced at the person in front of her.

The man’s eyes flickered, “You cried?”

Tears pooled in Lu Wan’s eyes again, “I need some money, within two days… you… please help me.”

The young man was silent for a moment, raised the corners of his lips, and asked sarcastically, “Where’s your rich second-generation boyfriend?”

Lu Wan lowered her head and shook her head weakly.

“Got dumped?” the young man sneered, “Why, did he turn around and reconcile with his fiancée from a wealthy house?”

“…Stop talking—“

“Where’s the scholarship?”

“I didn’t get first place…and even so it’s not enough.”

“… Quick money never comes clean, Wanwan.”

Facing the sobbing girl with the beautiful face, the young man gestured to the tall building behind him, blanketed with the red and green neon lights. It was like a cave full of dark magic that could swallow people’s hearts——

“If you work here part-time, you can get tens of thousands as commission from some idiot who’s in a good mood and opens a set of wines. However, you may not be able to escape unscathed.”

Lu Wan’s grip tightened on the strap of her schoolbag, her face was pale, but her eyes were resolute and she raised her head, “I understand, I still want to do it.”

There was a brief silence.

“OK.”

He smiled, but the smile didn’t seep into his dark eyes. “As you wish.”

On the other side.

Curled up on He Jinxing’s Maybach, Gou An was carefully peeping at the person sitting next to her from the corner of her eye.

Compared with his meticulous demeanor at the freshman welcome festival, he was much more relaxed now. Three buttons were unbuttoned at the collar of his shirt, and his hair had been pushed back at some point and looked a bit messy…

The profile was extremely handsome.

He was on the phone, and the person on the other side was probably a university official because after listening patiently for a moment, the man beside her calmly asked, “Since there is no problem with the first placer, then why not give the scholarship?”

There was silence for a while, and Gou An couldn’t really hear what the person on the other end said. He seemed to only say a few words in a panicked tone and hung up the call.

He Jinxing always seemed to speak like this, gentle and without excess emotion, but it unexpectedly gave people a sense of pressure.

Gou An understood this kind of suffocation and sympathized.

He Jinxing put away the phone and didn’t explain anything to Gou An. He seemed to have completely forgotten that she was the ‘first placer without any problems’ he was just talking about. He treated her as if she was a transparent and used his iPad to read his email.

The atmosphere inside the car was so harmonious that Gou An felt a little complicated.

Her fingers unconsciously picked at the stitching of the handmade leather in the car and thought about the current development of the plot. It was a bit unbelievable——

What did this mean?

Did she already win?

T/N: The name of the club is Ye Weiyang. It means ‘the night is not over’ which is a great name for a pleasure place but it’s unwieldy in English and does not sound poetic at all. It’s not a brothel or anything like that, more like a high-end bar/club/ktv with private rooms upstairs where who knows what happens.

As for the commission, the way it probably works is attendants get commission when the people they serve order more drinks. You can imagine the scene: pretty girls would sit beside the guests and encourage them to drink more. But as Lu Wan’s friend warned, it’s easy for things to escalate when people are primed with alcohol, and Lu Wan might end up serving more than just drinks.

  1. thanks for the translation.

also, lu wan was kinda stupid tbh. she let her pride get in the way and didnt accept the money for something so necessary like a life-saving surgery, whether or not it was truly pride in not taking money for saving someone’s life or pride/arrogance/greed that she could make it bigger if she acted noble to snag a rich bf.

This! What are all those useless excuses? He Ran is the university student council president—someone must know what his WeChat ID is, right? If my grandma needed surgery and someone wanted to shove money at me as reward for something I did, I’d be knocking on doors trying to find that benefactor.

Or even without the need for surgery—I am struggling at poverty line and someone who has no ill intentions wanted to give me money as reward, why would I not take it? To be able to study without needing to work on part-time jobs is a huge help.

But the author is very clear that the people in this story—while flesh and blood—have their own character settings. Gou An can’t help being lawless and vicious, and Lu Wan is… a pure heroine 🙄

      1. I…can’t even say she’s a pure heroine. She’s pretty much an average human being. Generally law-abiding, with capacity for great selflessness and great selfishness. Actually, I feel that she’s pitiful; she clearly has low self-esteem and perhaps that little bit of pride is what keeps her afloat in her day to day struggles. I’m rather worried about her–she’s the type that finds it difficult to be flexible. Hope plot armor comes in and saves her because He Ran is useless.

On the other hand, as the saying goes: the pitiful also have something hateful about them… She prioritized her school romance with He Ran over getting reward money that would change her and her family’s life. That’s a once in a lifetime chance, rarer than winning the lottery or something. There are essentially no strings attached because she already “paid the price,” as it were. If she was really bothered by accepting the money, isn’t it fine to take the sum as a low-interest (or perhaps even no-interest) loan instead? I’m sure that He family sponsors other students; probably not usually directly, but through scholarships and such (since that 1st place prize was from them). She’s a good student and has a good work ethic, so she wouldn’t be a loss to invest in… But her pride was more important.

        1. I agree on her being average human but I have to say I don’t pity her at all and agree with the second part your comment.

I’ve been in a situation where I’m broke and in debt (right after college) and, in a separate time, had a severely sick parent (not life-threatening, but definitely at risk of reduced lifespan and needing costly medication) (during high school). Each of those times, I would have accepted the money as long as it’s not shadily obtained or came with consequences (eg loan sharks, beinh asked to do something illegal in return, etc). I place more value on my life/future and my parents more than pride.

And because of her pride, she end up needing to work at a questionable place where she may have to do many questionable things besides putting her future, reputation, and possibly physical well-being at risk.
