[FromTheDayTheEngagementWasBroken] Chapter 10.2 — Don’t Use Honorifics

He Jinxing was a person who probably utilized his time so efficiently that he could use ‘seconds’ as the unit of measurement, but because he was feeling lazy today, he brought an unknown college student who was languishing of illness to the hospital…

Many people seemed to be looking for He Jinxing on their way to the hospital. On the phone, there was a secretary or someone of that kind who asked anxiously where the boss was. He dismissed the call with a few words and appeared to have no intention of turning back.

From Lu Wan’s perspective, she could only see Mr. He sitting in a relaxed posture on the sofa with a hint of tiredness on his face—

He has a sharp jawline, a high nose bridge, and his thin lips were naturally imperious when not smiling.

God never played fair when creating humans. This one was given grace, wealth, an excellent brain, and—not yet done—was also given the most perfect skin.1

Lu Wan’s face felt a little warm. She didn’t know whether it was because of illness or something else. Her heartbeat was very fast, but she didn’t dare to say a word. She just sat there obediently and let the IV drip in silence.

After a long time, as if feeling Lu Wan’s gaze on him, He Jinxing lazily raised his eyelids and said, “Miss Lu, do you mind if I smoke?”

The sudden utterance made Lu Wan’s face flush more obviously. She raised her head and looked for the usual no-smoking sign above her head and suddenly remembered that this was a special ward… So she shook her head.

He Jinxing glanced across her blushing cheeks indifferently, stood up and went to the window, opened it, lit the cigarette, and took the initiative to chat, “Are you short of money?” The doctor said that although Ms. Lu’s health was generally fine, she was anxious, stressed, and lacked rest.

While talking, He Jinxing’s fell on Lu Wan’s hands—she instinctively pulled them back. There were many fine callous on her hands caused by doing odd menial jobs.

Lu Wan nodded and said in a soft voice, “There is an elder at home who needs medical treatment.”

“What disease?”

“Kidney disease, my grandmother requires regular dialysis.”

“That’s really expensive.”

He Jinxing voice was gentle but nevertheless seemed a little distant. By now, he has already discovered that when he did his good deed, he unexpectedly encountered someone with a special identity.

After that rainy night, He Jinxing learned a little more about the story of his nephew He Ran’s savior, his white moonlight——

He knew that her surname was Lu. Her parents died a few years ago, and she lived with her grandmother in the lower district. Her life was very hard. When she was seven or eight years old, she went to the mountain to sweep graves during the Qingming Festival and accidentally rescued Young Master He who had been kidnapped at the time and was being held in an abandoned factory located on the same mountain.

He Jinxing just listened to the story. After all, repaying the favor had nothing to do with him—he was not the one who was saved.

He didn’t expect to meet Miss Lu in person today.

“You are in such a difficult situation, and you helped He Ran back then, but he never thought of helping you?”

“He wanted to give me a sum of money,” Lu Wan said softly, “I didn’t ask for it. That felt a bit weird. After all, I really didn’t save him for money.”

He Jinxing didn’t react much after hearing this.

In fact, he was a little surprised. He originally thought that no matter the circumstances—after all, He Ran even dared to slap the table while confronting his Young Uncle in the study and yell at his face for this girl—then he should be able to properly arrange for her comfort, behind her back if need be…

Unexpectedly, in his nephew’s so-called ‘proper settlement of a favor’, when the person politely refused a sum of money, he really gave up and didn’t continue with other measures. Leaving it like this, he naturally let the person he supposedly owed his life to to continue to struggle at the poverty line, run herself ragged working part-time while studying, and eventually end up in the hospital.

He Jinxing flicked the ashes from his cigarette and felt a little headache. The He family never liked being in debt to others.

Just like back when Old Mr. He owed his life to the Gou family; the Gou family has grown steadily over the years with the support of the He family.

Thinking of the Gou family, He Jinxing also thought of the young miss from the Gou family.

… Unlike this Lu Wan in front of him who was good-looking but obviously malnourished and looked pitiful, she was well-raised.

She looked overly protected by her family, was obviously afraid to death of him, but nevertheless dared to look directly at him and ask him for five million.

An unconscious smile flashed across his dark eyes and soon disappeared without a trace. He Jinxing didn’t even notice that his thoughts had gone a little off track——

He stared out the window in a trance until the ward door violently banged open from outside, and a young man’s voice rushed in shouting, “Lu Wan!”.

The man leaning against the window frowned slightly, turned his head, and what he saw was another figure following behind the whirring young man—not in a hurry, this time.

The weather has turned a bit cold today. Gou An wore a long-sleeved, thin, hooded sweatshirt and a short skirt today. The canvas shoes worth hundreds of yuan on her feet made her legs look white and straight.

The skirt was a bit short, reaching a few centimeters above the knees.

…Actually, He Jinxing was a little surprised as to why He Ran brought her too.

It seemed his nephew may not be right in the head.

But then, it wasn’t his business and he didn’t say anything. When Gou An respectfully greeted him “Mr. He”, the man just nodded at her casually…

Then he realized that he couldn’t say how much he liked this ‘respect from the younger generation.’

The man’s eyes slid over the motorcycle track-type safety helmet carried by Gou An indifferently in her hand.

Three seconds later, his eyes slid away, paused, and then slid back to Gou An.

“Did you here come by bike?” He Jinxing asked.

Gou An didn’t know why Lord Yama was interested in the means of transportation they came in. She looked a little stupid as she blinked at him and nodded, then noticed that He Jinxing was frowning.

… Why is Lord Yama unhappy again??

T/N: When He Jinxing thought ‘after all, he was not the one who was saved‘, I think he was referring not just to compensating Lu Wan monetarily but also in the traditional ‘marriage for a life-saving grace’ sense. As for financial compensation, he was just an uncle—He Ran and his parents were there to take care of this matter.

Speaking of ‘skin’ and ‘bones’ (our footnote today), Jian Hang from Marriage First, Love Later was described — by a rival, no less— as having beautiful skin and even more beautiful bones. Go check her out 🥰

FOOTNOTE:

  1. Lu Wan is not just talking about He Jinxing’s epidermis here—although I’m sure it’s flawless and has no visible pores because Male Lead haha. In Buddhist terms, ‘skin’ is the outer appearance of a person. So saying someone has ‘good skin’ means they are good looking, and saying someone is ‘all skin and no ability’ is… not so good. This is in contrast to ‘bones’ which is everything else inside that makes a person—aptitude, attitude, temperament, emotions etc. ↩︎
