[FromTheDayTheEngagementWasBroken] Chapter 3.1 — I’m Sorry, Please Punish Me

The calendar on the bedside shows September 17, 2022.

There was still more than two years before Gou An would be sent to prison.

In about fifteen minutes, her fiancé—Young Master He Ran—would come to her, tell her in person that she was a liar and resolutely ask for an end to the engagement.

This was where, with great fanfare, the first step to the tragic scene of her life behind bars (not!) would begin.

At this time, Gou An’s only thought about this sudden change in her life’s trajectory was: Why are you still struggling? If you know you’re making a mistake step by step, it’s better to change your ways and admit your errors!

[Jiaojiao: Yes, the wise recognize the current trends, and the useless ones go to Oita1.]

Gou An: “…”

Gou An raised her hand and tossed her hair; she turned around and found her cell phone from the bag thrown on the sofa. The cell phone still had 10% battery. She hadn’t opened it all afternoon and there was only one message: it was from He Ran.

[He Ran: Come down this instant, I have something to tell you.]

Look at this arrogant tone of voice.

Gou An took a deep breath and decisively threw away the phone.

Was He Ran furious at her for her lies?

It didn’t matter.

Before he gets angry, she could surrender, confess everything, and seek leniency.

……

Gou An went downstairs.

At this moment, the lights were on, and He Ran was sitting in the living room with his back to her. The Young Master He was wearing a sports uniform. As the star player of the university basketball team, he had tanned skin but it did nothing to detract from his handsomeness. In school, he could easily capture the hearts of thousands of girls.

Gou An once naively thought that all the glory of this young and handsome man belonged to her as a matter of course.

Hearing the footsteps, He Ran turned around.

He saw Gou An. She was wearing a white nightdress with only a denim jacket over it. Her face was a little pale, and he paused for a moment.

Their eyes looked at each other.

“Gou An.” He cleared his throat slowly but stared at her with confidence and even had a bit of impatience in his tone, “So you’re finally willing to go down, why even bother to make a fuss in the first place, I have something to ask you today!”

“Oh.”

Since she just woke up, Miss Gou’s voice was still unnaturally hoarse, like scraped by fine sand.

There was nothing else after that short response.

There was no usual anger or coquettishness.

Just a bit of unnatural tightness.

He Ran was stunned.

In his memory, although Gou An was never very especially enthusiastic towards him, given his status as her ‘fiancé’, she always greeted him with a smile. Occasionally, she would have a little bit of the petulance and capriciousness of a pampered daughter from a noble family, and she could be quite clingy, but nothing really unbearable.

For example, she was unhappy when she learned that he was popular in school. From then on, whenever he played basketball, she would sit quietly by the basketball court, wait for him to finish playing, then magically deliver a bottle of iced drink and stare at him while he drank it, smiling the entire time. From then on, the girls in the school who wanted to pursue him and still had some morals would stay away.

Things like that.

The little tricks of knocking on the mountain to shake the tigers2 have never stopped.

Miss Gou was very possessive of the ‘things’ that belonged to her.

Rarely has her reaction been as indifferent as it was today.

He Ran has not yet recovered.

Gou An had no time to figure out Young Master He’s complicated expression. Right at this moment, she was staring at the top of his head with some curiosity. Her black and limpid eyes seemed to be looking at empty space, but in fact she was focused on the brightly shining, light green letters that said: [Favorability Level: 40]

It seemed this was the  function of the system.

“I also have something to say to you.” After a long time, Gou An nodded slightly and said, “Should we go to your house?”

He Ran didn’t expect that Gou An would suddenly ask to come to He’s house. He was caught off guard and didn’t react. He stared at her face for a long time…

His eyes ran down all the way from her nightgown to her feet. A pair of straight but shapely calves ended on feet stuffed into fluffy rabbit slippers. She stood quietly on the stairs, half of her body shrouded in shadow.

After she finished speaking, she really started walking towards the door.

Just when she had almost passed He Ran, He Ran grabbed her.

The strength of his arm was quite strong. Gou An raised her head blankly. Unexpectedly, she found that the green sign on the top of the young man’s head was flashing and the color had become darker.

The words [Favorability: 40] flickered and turned into [Favorability: 37].

Gou An: “???”

No….

Was this stupid script really okay?

Was it so easy to hate someone?

She didn’t even have time to do anything: she just passed him by!

Gou An, who had opened her mouth to say something, was shocked into silence. Then she heard a low, hoarse, male voice in her ears. He Ran’s originally not unattractive face now turned gloomy, “Are you going out like this?”

Gou An blinked, “What’s wrong?”

He Ran’s eyes fell on the silky, white skin showing outside the thin straps of Gou An’s nightgown.

The vein on his temple twitched, and he turned away unnaturally, “My young uncle just came back from a business trip tonight.”

Gou An was confused, “And so?”

He Ran glared at her, “And so?! Someone else is at home! Another man!”

Gou An was silent for a moment, said “Oh”, then casually pulled up the zipper of her denim jacket. “Is this okay?”

Their engagement was about to be broken off and there were still so many trivial things to worry about!

He Ran let her go with a gloomy face and was silent for a long time. He didn’t know what was wrong—he suddenly said, “Forget it, let’s talk about my affairs another day. I’m going back first.”

After saying that, he turned around and rushed out.

Gou An: “?”

No… why do we have to talk about it another day??

FOOTNOTE:

  1. The first is an idiom—those with outstanding talents can understand what is happening and act accordingly. The second is a pop culture reference—it’s the title of a novel apparently. So yeah, Jiaojiao meshed them together 😂 ↩︎
  2. Idiom. A deliberate show of strength to warn others. ↩︎
