[WrongThenWrong] Chapter 18.1 — Day 6 (Missed Opportunity)

Cheng Liu leaned back on the sofa in the living area and started reading about a prospective business partner’s information on her phone. She had an appointment with the person tomorrow evening and she needed to be briefed on the situation in advance.

He Bai had sent over a summarized report and also attached some video materials featuring said business partner in recent years.

This was Cheng Liu’s personal habit. She wanted to read not only the Chief Assistant’s written summary, but also the external performance of her business partners.

Cheng Liu put on her earphones, and the interviews and speaking engagements of the business partner across several public occasions played on her phone. She stared at the other person’s face and body language to judge their temperament, their likes and dislikes.

The company they had an appointment with tomorrow evening was once the leader in the home furnishing field. It had been popular all over the country and even sold well overseas. Unfortunately, in recent years, it had failed to keep up with the times and was gradually overtaken in the market by the emerging modern, smart home innovations.

Now, they were trying to catch up, so they reached out to Shenyin Technology and wanted to cooperate.

Cheng Liu watched a few videos, then suddenly closed the screen and called He Bai directly.

The call was quickly answered, “President Cheng.”

“Who was the person who coordinated with you from Yayue1?” Cheng Liu asked him.

Yayue was the name of the company they have an appointment with tomorrow evening.

He Bai was surprised. Cheng Liu has never asked about this kind of thing before. After hesitating for a moment, he said, “It should be Yayue Chairman’s Secretary.”

Cheng Liu looked in the direction of the bedroom, stood up from the sofa, and walked to the balcony before saying again, “Should?”

He Bai realized that something was wrong. He recalled the conversation a few days ago and whispered, “I only asked who wanted to meet you, not who she was.”

Cheng Liu stood in front of the balcony, listening to He Bai’s explanation on the other end of the phone, and looked outside.

She rarely lived on the second floor; it was too close to the streets and noisy.

The wind in early April blew over with a chill. Cheng Liu put her hand on the railing and said, “Check to see if Yayue Company has changed people recently. The information about the person I will have dinner with tomorrow night is wrong.”

“I… Got it.” He Bai heard the sound of a ‘click’ as Cheng Liu hung up the call on the other end. His head lowered, he took a deep breath before beginning his inquiries as to the recent internal news of Yayue Company.

Within half an hour, Cheng Liu received another call from He Bai.

“The Chairman of Yayue was secretly hospitalized. Last month, the right to speak in the company was handed over to his daughter, Zhou Shengyan. She should have been the one who contacted me that day.” He Bai said in a quiet tone, “Sorry, I’ll reorganize the information you need.”

“There’s no rush, we can sort it out tomorrow,” Cheng Liu said. “It’s getting late.”

“Senior sister2,” He Bai hurriedly said before Cheng Liu could hang up the phone, his voice low and hoarse, “How did you know the head of Yayue has been replaced?”

“With the personality of Yayue’s Chairman, transformation is impossible.” Cheng Liu lowered her eyes and looked at her fingers. There was no emotion on her face at this time. Occasionally, the lights from the roadside flashed across her face, making her seem a bit inhumane. “Even when he knows that there is something wrong with his decision, he will never change it.”

All his public videos showed that this person was extremely confident and would insist on his own self. Such people would rather destroy the company in their own hands than admit their mistakes. Let’s not even talk about directly approaching Shenyin Technology and wanting to discuss cooperation with them.

“Prepare another dossier tomorrow; just go to bed early tonight,” Cheng Liu did not criticize the Assistant.

However, He Bai couldn’t let go of the mistake he made. He thought he had done enough to improve himself in the past few years.

Whether outside or inside the company, many people say that Cheng Liu had a good Assistant who always arranged everything properly and impeccably.

In particular, Cheng Liu often gave people the impression of being a bit unreliable and prone to going her own way.

What those people didn’t know was that Cheng Liu had actually brought He Bai up.

As long as Cheng Liu wanted something done, there was nothing she couldn’t do.

He Bai held the phone and smiled bitterly. It seemed that he could never catch up to her and could only ever chase after her.

… …

The bedroom door was not fully closed. Ji Chaozhou could faintly hear the conversation outside, but couldn’t hear clearly what she was saying. He was lying on the bed on his side, his eyes open, his thoughts wandering.

After an unknown period of time, Ji Chaozhou gradually lost consciousness and fell into a deep sleep.

In the living area, Cheng Liu slept on the sofa for the night. She was worried that her boyfriend would have a fever again, so she didn’t book another room for herself.

In the middle of the night, Cheng Liu got up and went to the bedroom to check on her boyfriend. His temperature was normal.

She found that although he was sleeping, his eyebrows had not relaxed at all, probably because the impact of the fire had not yet subsided.

Cheng Liu stood there for a long time, making sure that her boyfriend was asleep before turning around and returning to the living area.

But before she could turn around fully, her eyes fell on his forearm. She stopped moving.

Ji Chaozhou slept peacefully, but his pajamas were too wide and his sleeves had slid up, exposing half of his cold, white forearms.

The light in the bedroom was not turned on, but his forearms were too white, and Cheng Liu’s eyesight was very good. She could clearly see the red marks.

Cheng Liu bent down to look closer and found scratches. From the position and angle, only Ji Chaozhou himself could have made these.

Did he scratch himself by accident?

Cheng Liu looked at the wounds carefully for a while longer and finally decided that it was not too serious; it was just a bit red, so she pulled down his sleeves and turned back to the living room.

As soon as she lay back on the sofa, Cheng Liu noticed that He Bai had emailed over new information.

It seemed that Mr. He’s competitive spirit had been fired up and he felt compelled to stay up until midnight and finish the new materials before calling it a day.

Cheng Liu shook her head, and quickly read through it before going to sleep.

She had a good night’s sleep.

… …

At six o’clock in the morning, Cheng Liu opened her eyes on the dot. She first looked towards the bedroom to make sure her boyfriend had shown no signs of getting up, then she hurriedly washed up and slipped out of the hotel.

She was going to the bank.

The bank was not open because it wasn’t yet business hours, but the president came early today.

“President Cheng, please have a look.” The president opened the two boxes before him, and an unmistakable golden light flashed.

Cheng Liu looked at the items carefully and finally nodded with satisfaction, “Good.”

“Where do you want to put it?” the president asked.

Cheng Liu thought for a moment, “The trunk of the car will do.”

She and her boyfriend would be going to the mall to buy things later this morning. After they finished shopping, she would lead her boyfriend to the trunk of the car—supposedly to put in their purchases—and then the gifts that represented her true love would suddenly appear!

Her boyfriend would definitely be happy.

Bank President: “… Okay.”

So, two gold bricks and a golden plaque were put into the trunk of Cheng Liu’s car. She carefully hung the red flowers on the golden plaque, then covered the meticulously arranged golden gifts with a large cloth.
