A minute later, the call went through.
“Young President Cheng, are you doing this on purpose?” Director Li growled over the phone. “You sent me a message at 6 o’clock yesterday and now called at 5 o’clock today? Are you going to come to my house and knock on the front door at 4 o’clock tomorrow?!”
“Please, Director Li, I need your help with something,” Cheng Liu said seriously.
“You’d better have something urgent!” Director Li said in a low voice.
As soon as Cheng Liu explained the situation, Director Li sat up excitedly from the bed, then glanced at his wife who was about to wake up with all the noise he’s making, and sneaked into the living room.
“Boyfriend? Hey, Young President Cheng, why didn’t you tell me earlier!” Li Dong’s eyes were full of gossip, and his whole face now glowed with vitality, “You two can stay for as long as you want, and I’ll even give you a 50% discount.”
“Then I would trouble Director Li,” Cheng Liu said.
“No trouble, no trouble!” Li Dong said immediately, “You can always come to me for this kind of thing!”
In two days, he would find a chance to go to the hotel for an inspection; he would express condolences and, along the way, meet Young President Cheng’s boyfriend! He’ll finally find out who was this person so full of ability that he could make Cheng Liu’s iron tree bloom!
Not long after Cheng Liu hung up, the front desk received a call, said a few words, then handed two room cards over. She even wanted to send them up personally.
“No need, we’ll go up by ourselves.” Cheng Liu turned and walked towards the resting area in the lobby.
Ji Chaozhou didn’t take the elevator; he still took the stairs.
Cheng Liu could see that he was walking extremely slowly, but she didn’t ask any questions, just quietly followed behind him.
Once they reached the second floor, she opened the assigned room with one of the room cards, then handed the other room card to Ji Chaozhou, but she didn’t go in herself. “You should have a good rest first.”
Ji Chaozhou nodded to her and closed the door.
He sat quietly on the bed for a long time, then got up suddenly, stumbled towards the bathroom, and there followed the sound of uncontrollable vomiting.
Ji Chaozhou couldn’t spit out anything at all—it was only a physiological reflex.
Cheng Liu stood in the corridor for a while—just on case—but the suite had excellent sound insulation, and she couldn’t hear any sound from inside. She turned around and drove back to Wenxing Community.
At this time, the sun was just rising.
There were still a few residents standing near the fifth building, supported by relatives and friends.
“Can we go in now? We have a lot of things in our house!”
“We are still checking, you can go in when there is no more danger,” the property manager shouted.
This wait lasted another hour. After the danger was deemed eliminated, these people were allowed to go in, but they could not linger for too long. They had to come out immediately after taking their essential things.
Because of the previous explosion, the entire first floor has been burnt and blasted, but fortunately there were no residents on the first floor.
Cheng Liu went to the roof first, and sure enough, she saw a mobile phone lying on the ground.
She didn’t look around much, just stepped forward and put the phone in her pocket, then walked back down to the second floor.
The door to Ji Chaozhou’s unit was ajar and warped.
Cheng Liu walked in and saw that the originally empty living room was completely blackened by smoke, traces of fire everywhere. There was a melted card holder on the coffee table, which she immediately shattered into black pieces. Inside were presumably ID cards and other card items, but the content could no longer be recognized.
The first and second floors were the most severely burned. The explosion came so fast that the fire spread here in a few minutes.
Cheng Liu gave up the idea of getting clothes for her boyfriend. She walked to the balcony where the flowers were planted—they were almost all burnt away by the fire.
“Don’t stay too long, come out quickly,” the property owner shouted from outside.
Cheng Liu was about to leave when her eyes landed on a corner blackened by smoke; she suddenly stopped in her footsteps.
There was a small pot of lily-of-the-valley that miraculously hadn’t been burned.
She bent down and carried the blackened pot of flowers out.
Cheng Liu walked out of Building No. 5. She went to the convenience store to buy a bottle of water, squatted outside, wet the paper towel, and wiped off the black ash on the lily-of-the-valley, bit by bit, revealing the original warm white.
She didn’t know if it could still survive.
She would bring it to the hotel for her boyfriend.
… …
By the time Cheng Liu got back to the hotel again, the sun had already risen high in the sky, and she was holding a pot of lilies-of-the-valley in one hand and several bags of newly bought clothes in the other.
She swiped her room access card, opened the door, and walked in.
Sitting on the edge of the bed, Ji Chaozhou still looked the same—his whole body was icy and frosty, but there was an imperceptible blush at the top of his cheeks.
“The second floor was burned badly, but this pot of flowers seems to have survived.” Cheng Liu walked farther inside the room, put the pot of lily-of-the-valley on the low table, and put a few bags of clothes on the sofa, “New clothes, already dry-cleaned.”
She didn’t know what size her boyfriend wore, so she bought several. It’d probably fit.
“By the way,” Cheng Liu lowered her head and took out his phone from her pocket, “I found your phone on the roof.”
Ji Chaozhou reached out to take the phone; there was no sign of it being burned. After calling the police, he couldn’t at all remember what happened afterwards.
“Today, you take the day off for the meantime, don’t think about anything else and don’t worry about work.” Cheng Liu could feel very keenly that he was not in a good state.
Ji Chaozhou turned on his phone, and there were several missed calls: some from Ji Mushan and some from Aunt Yun.
Only then did he realize that he had dialed Number 6 earlier and that the call lasted for forty minutes.
Ji Chaozhou raised his eyes and looked at Cheng Liu who was standing across from him. “Last night… I called you?”
