[WrongThenWrong] Chapter 14.2 — Day 4 (Learning Experience)

The two walked into the special elevator; He Bai pressed the 26th floor button. Cheng Liu looked at him through the mirrored wall of the elevator, “You go to the office first, I’m heading to the unmanned driving technology department.”

“Okay.” He Bai reached out and pressed the 17th floor this time.

After a while, the elevator doors opened, and Cheng Liu walked out first.

The 17th floor held the research and development office of the unmanned driving technology department. There were only eleven people in the office, but all of them were top technicians in the industry.

Cheng Liu first passed a 300-square-meter glass-walled room which housed a miniature model of the city’s roads occupying two-thirds of the room. There were two glass-covered cabinets by the wall filled with various 1:18 car models. Each car was custom-made at a high price and can actually be driven.

Inside the room, two technicians were currently testing the self-driving software. Model cars were running on the miniature roads. One technician placed obstacles on the road from time to time, and the other technician was responsible for recording the car’s response.

This was just a rough test, more often than not a decompression toy for the technicians—you have to use a real car to truly test the system.

Cheng Liu went in and watched them test for a while, then went out and continued to walk farther into the department. The R&D’s main office was the third room.

When she entered, the three people on the right were facing their respective computers, tapping away on the keyboard with their fingers. There were four people sitting in the middle: two of them were in a daze; one was banging his head on the table, making a constant klonk sound; and the other was chatting with the doll in his arms. The person on the left was shaking his head with his earphones on, his fingers resting on the keyboard, while another person stood in front of the printer with his back to Cheng Liu, a thick stack of paper in his hand.

The behavior by the people inside the room was considered within normal range, Cheng Liu can understand the pain of the technicians, but the person standing in front of the printer made her feel strange.

According to the company’s consumables statistics, the printers on this floor have hardly been touched—they have a habit of sending all reports to Cheng Liu electronically.

Cheng Liu walked up to the employee standing in front of the printer and asked, “What are you printing?”

The employee was startled and hurriedly grabbed the printed paper, but the printer was still spitting out paper, and his face turned a full red.

The employee bowed his head and explained, “Tomorrow is the fifth anniversary of my girlfriend and I, so I want to print out our chat records from the five years since we got together. I don’t have enough paper at home, so I can only come to the company to print temporarily.”

Cheng Liu looked around at the people in the office, and with a low voice suddenly said to him, “Step out with me.”

The employee’s face turned pale—he guessed that he might have crossed the line when using the company’s consumables for his own benefit.

As soon as he came out of the room, he admitted his mistake to Cheng Liu, “I’m sorry, President Cheng, I shouldn’t use the company’s printer for private matters.”

Cheng Liu waved her hand, “It’s just paper, what are you apologizing for? If it’s not enough, then go to the administration department to ask for more.”

The employee froze, raised his head, and asked hesitantly, “Then you wanted to talk to me… for work?”

Cheng Liu cleared her throat, then asked him, “You said you have been with your girlfriend for five years, do you give her gifts every year?”

The employee didn’t understand where Cheng Liu was heading with her question but he nodded truthfully, “We send gifts to each other every anniversary, and we also send gifts on birthdays and other special occasions.”

Cheng Liu was thoughtful. “Then you must be very experienced in giving gifts to girlfriends.”

“I don’t know about being experienced,” the employee from the technical department scratched his head in embarrassment. “I also worry that my girlfriend won’t like the gift I give her…”

Young President Cheng suddenly seemed to have found a confidant and patted the employee on the shoulder, sighing. “I also find it very difficult to give gifts. My boyfriend didn’t like the gift I give him.”

“… but my girlfriend said she liked each gift very much after seeing them.” The employee finished the second half of the sentence in a daze.

“…” Cheng Liu immediately withdrew her hand, a little jealous, and pretended not to care, “Oh, really? That’s good.”

“President Cheng, you… have a boyfriend?” The employee never expected that President Cheng would call him out and take the initiative to break such big news.

Speaking of her boyfriend, Cheng Liu proudly said, “Yes, he is very good-looking.”

“… Is it Chief Assistant He?” the employee asked in a low voice.

There were rumors in the company’s internal group that the two had a close relationship; one was the president and the other was the chief assistant, and the two have always been single. And it was said that when President Cheng established Shenyin Technology, Chief Assistant He was already always by her side.

Cheng Liu frowned, “What nonsense, I have excellent taste.” She added firmly, “My boyfriend is prettier than He Bai.”

“Oh, is that so?” The employee silently kept this breaking news in his heart, planning to share it with the group when he went back.

“Let me ask what gifts you gave your girlfriend,” Cheng Liu said, finally revealing her real purpose in asking him to come out.

The employee recalled, “I gave her a gemstone necklace on our first anniversary, and bought two plane tickets on our second anniversary to accompany her to see the aurora borealis in Norway. On our third anniversary, I hired a drone to perform and fly around her working place at night. For our fourth anniversary, I got her tickets to her favorite band’s concert. This year it’s just as you saw earlier.”

Cheng Liu thought about it and felt strange, “Why do the gifts you give your girlfriend get cheaper every year?”

Employee: “…”

“It’s not cheap, it’s about finding out what my girlfriend wanted, and then later, giving it on our anniversary.”

“Really?” Cheng Liu said, still expressing her doubts.

Seeing this, the employee asked, “President Cheng, what gift did you give your boyfriend that he didn’t like it?”

“A jade diorama I bought at an auction.” Cheng Liu remembered the gift that was returned and was still in the trunk of her car.

“Aren’t things at the auction not cheap?” the employee asked.

Cheng Liu said, a bit absent-minded, “Fortunately, it’s just a little more than five million.”

Ah! More than five million? As expected, this was President Cheng!

The employee said earnestly, “President Cheng, look, even such an expensive gift couldn’t impress your boyfriend. It can be seen that it’s not true that the more expensive the gift, the better it is.”

“Is that so?” Cheng Liu was really puzzled now—how could a cheap gift show her intentions?

“Of course!” The employee answered with a reliable look that spoke of experience, “And you can’t ask the other party what he wants, you must instead quietly observe what he likes. Only then can you give a gift that will express the affection between you.”

Cheng Liu thought about it carefully, but still felt that his advice was unreliable. “You and your girlfriend have been dating for five years, why are you still not married?”

The employee chuckled. “In addition to the chat records of the five years we were together, I am going to propose to my girlfriend tomorrow. The venue has been arranged, and the ring has been bought.”

Cheng Liu suddenly felt a little sour in her heart, “You move very fast.”

“This year my girlfriend wants to feel safe,” the employee said seriously, “so I want to give her a home.”

It was only then that Cheng Liu felt that there was something about this employee, and it seemed that he was, indeed, reliable.

“Okay then, when I get married someday, please be a witness,” Cheng Liu boasted.

The employee watched President Cheng leave with a flattered expression on his face.

… …

A few minutes later, there was an explosive message in the company’s chat group that didn’t include Cheng Liu and He Bai: [President Cheng has a boyfriend! And it’s not Chief Assistant He! This new guy is said to be prettier than him!]

At this time, Cheng Liu had already arrived at her office on the 26th floor. He Bai was in his office just outside Cheng Lui’s.

She sat at her desk and thought for a long time. If she printed out the previous chat records between herself and her boyfriend… her boyfriend would break up with her on the spot, right?

However, it was time to get her phone back, after all, in there was a record of her boyfriend’s former enthusiasm for her.

Cheng Liu called the hotel in City G and asked them to mail it over.

The hotel manager at the other end said, “Okay, the phone should arrive tomorrow afternoon.”

  1. “This year my girlfriend wants to feel safe, so I want to give her a home.”
Simple, right? But sadly, marriage is the gift women want most. But some men can’t afford it.

  2. No way she realizes it 🤣
