[WrongThenWrong] Chapter 7.1 — Day 2 (Sure enough, it’s a rival!)

This was Cheng Liu’s second serious meal with her boyfriend, and she found that he didn’t eat well at all, as if what’s in front of him was some difficult-to-swallow poison.

Cheng Liu’s eyes fell on her boyfriend’s thin wrist. Modeling was really not an easy job—he couldn’t even eat his fill.

“You have to eat well, don’t let Aunt Yun worry about you.” Cheng Liu had already taken the initiative to call out ‘Aunt Yun’ intimately, without any psychological barriers in her heart.1

Her boyfriend’s Aunt Yun is her, Cheng Liu’s, Aunt Yun!

Before leaving, Aunt Yun personally asked her to take good care of her boyfriend, thus, Cheng Liu now felt that she had a little more responsibility on her shoulders.

Hearing her words, Ji Chaozhou’s hand holding the chopsticks paused for a moment. He remembered what Aunt Yun had said to him in the pavilion earlier.

At the very least… before Aunt Yun leaves, he didn’t want her to worry about him.

Cheng Liu was satisfied as she watched her boyfriend begin to eat seriously. She continued to  stare at his dazzling face, feeling a little distracted.

Her boyfriend was good everywhere, but the name was a tad rustic.

Whether it was ‘Wang Haiyang’ or ‘Wang Hongyang’, it wasn’t easy on the ears, and Cheng Liu was unwilling to call his name.

Calling ‘Hongyang’ against such a face—she really felt very conflicted.

But after all, it was the name chosen by his parents, and she couldn’t possibly ask her boyfriend to change it. Well, it’s better to not just call him by his name at all, Cheng Liu thought.

“What are your plans for the afternoon?” Cheng Liu asked enthusiastically, after a while of eating.

There was nothing important in the company these days, so she might as well spend more time with her boyfriend and practice promoting the spirit of a good girlfriend.

Ji Chaozhou looked up at the enthusiastic bodyguard sitting on the opposite side of the table. She was probably afraid of being fired, so she didn’t want to miss any opportunity to do things for him.

“Flower market.”

“Okay.”

… …

City S only had one large flower market. It covered a vast area, but it’s not within the city limits. Inside it, all kinds of flowers were placed in the open, which was extremely dazzling.

Cheng Liu had never been to this kind of place before. She followed diligently behind her boyfriend, watching him stop and go in various stalls, occasionally picking up flowers she didn’t know and sniffing lightly.

This was an area that Cheng Liu didn’t understand at all. At this moment, all she could see was her boyfriend in front of her. He was clearly only wearing a light-weight, black windbreaker, but the colorful flowers around him pale in comparison with him.

Her boyfriend stood in front of a flower stand, fiddled with some branches, and finally picked a flower the color of white jade and sniffed it delicately.

Cheng Liu’s heart started beating wildly again.

Several years ago, when she had just started the company and it was the first time for her to solicit investments, her heart didn’t beat as fast.

… …

Ji Chaozhou picked a few, new varieties of flowers that he was interested in taking back to the lab so he could test them as possible raw materials for perfume.

Ranshan was a perfume brand developed by Ji Chaozhou’s mother. It was once very popular, but after his mother passed away, Ranshan returned to being a niche perfume again.

Now Ranshan was taken over by Ji Chaozhou. He inherited his mother’s talent for using scents. He developed a new perfume the year before last—’Midu’—which successfully made Ranshan appear in the public eye again.2

“I’ll hold them for you,” Cheng Liu said firmly, then followed behind her boyfriend.

Her business partners carried bags for their wives, and she carried flowers for her boyfriend—all of this was only natural!

Ji Chaozhou looked sideways at the bodyguard behind him for a moment, and then said, “Don’t touch the buds.”

“Okay, wi— boss!3 Cheng Liu stumbled at the name but successfully navigated it.

Ji Chaozhou looked away from the flowers in her hand, and didn’t care about the bodyguard’s stuttering just now.

Cheng Liu looked at the back of her boyfriend walking away and wiped off her sweat. Just now, she was thinking about something about her business partners and their wives, and almost said the wrong name.

Fortunately, she was quick-witted!

Earlier when they were at Aunt Yun’s, her boyfriend role-played with her, now she just naturally followed him.

She understood the fun had between lovers!

Thinking of this, Cheng Liu happened to see the flower stall owner next door take out a pair of sunglasses.

“Boss, how much for your sunglasses?”

The flower stall owner was taken aback, and then said, “I bought these for myself.” He had just opened the package.

“Sell it for a thousand?” Cheng Liu asked.

“Uh…sold!” The flower stall owner handed her the sunglasses without hesitation and offered his payment code with the other, “Scan this.” He bought the sunglasses online for only 300 yuan.

Two minutes later, Cheng Liu, wearing black sunglasses and holding a few flowers, silently followed behind her boyfriend, playing the role of ‘bodyguard’ dutifully.

Ji Chaozhou picked out some flowers, and when he turned around to hand them over to No. 6, he saw that a pair of sunglasses had suddenly appeared on her face. He couldn’t help being slightly startled, but he quickly focused on his own affairs.

Seeing her boyfriend’s gaze linger on her face for a few more seconds, Cheng Liu thought to herself that she had bought the right sunglasses, and—sure enough—her boyfriend liked her as a bodyguard!

Although she didn’t know where this kind of inclination came from, it didn’t prevent Cheng Liu from trying to please her boyfriend.

FOOTNOTE:

1Cheng Liu called her by the word that family members use, following Ji Chaozhou (because shameless haha)—as opposed to the ‘aunt’ that a person would politely call someone who is around the same age as their mother. ↩︎

2 ‘染山’ Ranshan means something like ‘color-dyed mountain’ — which is a kinda poetic name for a perfume brand.↩︎ Not sure what ‘Midu’ is. Google tells me it’s the name of a very small, picturesque county in an autonomous prefecture (these are places with high population of ethnic groups or is their historic home).

3 老 lao literally means ‘old’, but not in any derogatory way. Cheng Liu was about to say 老婆 lao po or ‘wife’ but was able to change it to 老板 lao ban or ‘boss’. ↩︎

BTW, the phrase used in the title refers to someone who sits opposite you in a game of strategy—like chess.

  1. The two of them don’t actually talk to one another so the mistaken identity play goes further. If she were to call him by Wang Hongyang she would find out that’s not his name. If she were to apoligize for neglecting their relationship and promising to be a better girlfriend she would find out he’s not her boyfriend and he would find she’s not his bodyguard

  2. Cheng Liu is just funny! She can take anything that happens in front of her and twist it in a way that “logically” makes sense to her. She’s seriously far removed from common sense, lol.

I have to say that she’s pretty smooth in her words when she want to be, though, and Ji Chaozhou is very accommodating to her. I wonder how many “dates” before they figure out their misunderstanding?

    Thanks for the chapter! 😀
